I don't think it's a matter of "pushing" or "forcing." It's more a matter of parental expectations, exposure to the desired skills (environment) and lifestyle habits.
If as a parent, you do nothing to prepare your child for the future then you'll have to deal with the consequences.
It is in the interest of the parents and the family as a whole that parents spend time with their children undertaking activities of value which in turn will encourage children to value learning for themselves. 近朱者赤近墨者黑。
The child is always under the influence of whatever he sees and hears. The more of the one thing he sees, the more he will be influenced by it. The less of it he sees, the less it will influence him. This has to do with environmental factors. Parents play the major role in a child's upbringing. You don't have to "push" a child to read. You just start reading to your child from one year old and keep on doing it all the way until he can read by himself. There's no need for "pushing." You just start by reading to your child from one year old.
