Appointment of aviation noise ombudsman 'a joke'
Community action group No Aircraft Noise has dismissed the Federal Government's appointment of an independent aviation ombudsman as "a joke".
Deputy Commonwealth ombudsman Ron Brent will begin the new role in September, reviewing complaints to Air Services Australia about noise levels.
No Aircraft Noise president Allan Rees says he thinks voters will be sceptical of the timing of appointment, weeks from the federal election.
"There's no indication that the Government is going to do something serious about reducing aircraft noise. In fact, quite the opposite," he said.
"People will just think this is another bureaucratic waste of time."
Transport Minister Anthony Albanese says the ombudsman will improve accountability to the public.
Mr Albanese's seat, Grayndler, takes in inner-western Sydney suburbs, including Leichhardt, Newtown, Dulwich Hill and Lilyfield, where excessive aircraft noise is a problem.
Mr Rees says he believes there is "resentment" from residents living under flight paths in Australia, which he believes will translate at the polls on August 21.
"It interferes with sleep. There's only a seven-hour curfew, so the threat of a lot more air traffic is something that people are concerned about," he said.
But Mr Albanese says the appointment satisfies calls for independent consideration of aircraft noise complaints.
"When it's determined by Air Services to examine new flight paths, the aircraft ombudsman will be there to make sure there's improved consultation with communities about that process," he said.
"Our airports are vital for our economy, [but] it's also vital that the communities who live around that airport have the confidence that their concerns are being met.
"In the past it's fair to say that actions could have been done better and some communities have been disappointed with the engagement that's occurred."
Mr Brent has served as the deputy Commonwealth ombudsman since 2003.
