Bank customers ‘left in the cold’
NOT HAPPY: Turramurra sisters June and Pam Kirwan with Gayle Grose.Picture: PAUL MELVILLE
ELDERLY banking customers are “being left out in the cold” by the big four banks.
National Australia Bank is closing its Turramurra branch, angering older customers who do not use the internet or do their banking by phone.
The bank says “foot traffic” at the branch has dropped 22 per cent in two years.
But Turramurra sisters Pam and June Kirwan, customers since the 1960s, said the banks were closing branches without considering the needs of older customers.
“We’ve been told that all of our banking details will be transferred to St Ives,” June Kirwan said.
“This means we have to go there or Gordon to do any over-the-counter banking because we don’t use the internet.
“We are concerned for older, retired people who may have to travel for up to 1 1/2 hours to get to Gordon - and there is no bus to St Ives from Turramurra.
“The big four banks should be addressing the issue about elderly customers and how they will adapt to internet and phone banking.”
Pam Kirwan said: “Banks can’t keep closing and leaving older people out in the cold.
“It is another loss of amenity for the community.”
NAB regional executive Lynda Arkulisz said the bank would hold a seminar at the William St branch before it closed on September 18.
“To ensure our Turramurra customers understand the banking options still available to them, we’ll be hosting a free seminar about how to use Australia Post services, internet banking and the ATM,” Ms Arkulisz said.
Another NAB spokeswoman said that whenever a branch was closed, the bank endeavoured to maintain an automatic teller presence.
“Customers will still have access to NAB ATMs in St Ives shopping village and Gordon or can alternatively conduct their banking at neighbouring branches - St Ives, Gordon or Hornsby - or via telephone and internet banking,” she said.
“As our customers are using more convenient channels such as telephone and internet banking at a time that suits them, NAB Turramurra has experienced a steady decline in foot traffic over the last two years.
“Over-the-counter transactions have fallen by 22 per cent over this time and continue to do so.”
