Dear Albert
Thank you for your recent enquiry to the Department of Primary Industries - Customer Service Centre.
The Department's response is:-
The statewide abalone daily bag limit is five, of which no more than two can be greenlip. However, greenlip abalone must not be taken from Port Phillip Bay.
In the situation you have explained the bag limit would be 10 and not 15.
It is not illegal to scuba dive for abalone as long as you don't break other rules below.
In addition to these measures a year round closure of recreational and commercial greenlip abalone fishing in Port Phillip Bay remains in place (introduced in September 2005) to allow recovery of greenlip abalone stocks.
You must carry a device for measuring abalone when fishing for abalone
You must use a blunt instrument when taking abalone. You must not use knives, screwdrivers or any sharp instrument that could cut the abalone
You must not shuck abalone or be in possession of shucked abalone while in, under or on Victorian waters. Also you must not land shucked abalone
You can only take abalone between sunrise and sunset (this also applies to the commercial sector)
You must not fish for abalone in the intertidal zone (waters less than 2m deep)
You must not fish for abalone in Marine National Parks and Marine Sanctuaries.
The Pocket Guide - "Recreational Abalone Fishing Regulations" can be viewed at www.dpi.vic.gov.au/fishing or we can take you details and arrange to have one posted to you.
