--------First Solo Flight after course above Great Ocean Road 大洋路-----------
自从上回从Bright回来后,一直等待机会实现自己个人的solo flight,可是天气一直都不怎么好,either was wind too strong or not right direction。不过还是能把握一些机会进行GH练习。
周三参加了club的meeting*,认识了其他一些新的novices,也知道接着下来就有一个event to be held in Apollo Bay(刚听说好像是什么雪糕的名字,查了一下地图才知道是一个很有名的旅游胜地--参加这个运动以来到过好些好漂亮的地方,让我们认识更多澳洲好玩的去处),是在Great Ocean Road上,perfect!可以飞又可以看风景,太好了,当然马上把accomodation book好啦(我们是住在一个离海边不到100米,就在大洋路边上的BIG4 caravan park)。Apollo Bay确实好。。。漂亮!the view is stunning! and it is a very relaxing town, about 3hrs drive from Melbourne (highly recommended for family 2+ days holiday stay)
* Skyhigh Paragliding Club has meeting every month,with pilots gather together and talking about different topics.

起飞场the launch就在一个风景的look out上,我们把车停好,爬到一半就让当时的风景给迷住了,it's shocking beautiful!

The club president was giving us site briefing (每个起飞场都需要在特定的wind direction & wind strength条件下才能take off,and a lot to learn about the site,like what's the normal safe route under perticular condition,where the rotor is etc)看来今天的风还是相对较大而且是cross wind,能飞的机会不是很大。需要由技术高经验足的experienced pilot have a go and take a test,give us some feedback.


由Switzerland来的pilot作为第一个test pilot(12yrs experience),he tried to top land but had a hard time,so the club president had to call it off!(又是有点失望,不过safety is always first,这个运动的很重要一点不是决定何时能飞,更是何时不应该飞--when not to fly)
于是我们大队伍就驾车40分钟到另一个大家估计有机会能safely launch的site(Rosana),bcos it takes different wind direction as it locates a bit deep in the bay。

在开往JohannaRosana的路上,我们遇到一只小动物在路上爬过,于是我们就停车下去看了一下,Clinton与我们car pool,and he did a lot of bush walking,that's why he knows a lot of outdoor stuff,he told us the name of this little one, but we forgot it, could anyone here tell me?


大队伍去到Johanna,那里的condition was not right either,too cross and too strong again,so we gave it up,decided to head off(又一次parawaiting经验--所以我常说‘这个运动不是你想飞就飞的,并不是想像中的那样'crazy',必须学会看天气,看海,看山,风向,风力。。。很多很多)
返回Apollo Bay,we decided to do some GH(ground handling)to make it up

在这个great ocean road旁边的美景地方做GH也是一种享受

* speadbar是paraglider的一个组件,是用来加速的,不详细说了,说了大家更迷糊


大伙都享受着GH


降落场landing paddock就是一个farm,牛群们也好奇的在傍边看热闹了(这个活动也会让你经常接触大自然)
当天晚上我们大伙人(around 30 pilots with some families)had a big meal in the local pub,had a great time

到第2天了,同样是一早到launch site wait,and it was right on,so everybody got ready

You can tell one glider had launched already.


club president协助我进行起飞前的pre-flight check*,他当时是duty pilot**
* 每一次起飞前我们必须进行必需的pre-flight check(对不起,有点拗口),必须检查lines is not tangle,not damage,and with right position,扣带完好,方向正确,还必须进行radio check(所有pilot都必须备有radio以便在空中沟通)
** duty pilot相当于safety officer和traffic control,是起飞场的协调员(这是club well regulated的又一方面,对吧?)


Now it's time for me to launch! I made it!又是那一句:beyond description!


你看,我在大洋路great ocean road上飞翔了!爽啊!


其他pilot也陆续起飞,空中traffic开始忙碌起来了(我们有rules of the air,简单说就是在什么情况下谁give way,也不详细说了,以免太technical了)


这张是当我soaring飞过起飞场时honey帮我照的,cool吧?我在上面好是忙碌啊

Great Ocean Road 的景色美丽是众所周知的了,只是当你能在另外一个角度(天空上)看它是就觉得实在。。。。太美了!!!!而且是自己的双手和身体控制自己的飞行方向和高度,在完全没有发动机声音的干扰下观赏,那是一种何等享受啊。。。。
在这里帖几张其他pilot拍的照片(我当时都忙着控伞,哪有空闲和这个水平拍照啊,不过美丽的景色我也是尽收眼底,至今难忘了)

最后几张照片真是太美了,不过感到脚在颤抖,恐高啊!

坐在我旁边的同事玩handgliding,在Sydney stanwell park,经常上班时checking 风向,不时玩失踪。与他说起paragliding,有点不屑,不知道是什么原因。想问LZ,2种gliding有什么区别呢?

我相信每一个玩gliding的人都习惯check weather的:)
Hangliding是源起于Australia的,已经有几十年历史了,而paragliding是源于法国的,在Australia只有20多年历史(其实也说明不了什么)
如果说起两者的不同,真是可以说一个晚上,但它们的飞行原理基本上是一样的,只是hangliding需要的风力要大,速度比paragliding要快,刺激一些,危险系数也甄应要高一些;而paraglider速度要慢些,但可以背着走,hang glider必须要用车来运,所以很多paraglider pilot都经常背起自己的glider和行装,到世界各地旅游飞翔的,hanglider就很少能这样做了(除非是组织活动或比赛)。在Australia,有很多pilot是两种都玩的。价格上hang glider要稍为要贵一些,或者这是你同事‘不屑’的原因吧,不过也有些只玩paraglider的人同样’不屑‘hang glider,嫌它们not transportable和霸占太多launch的set up时间和地方。
不过我相信这些都是极少数的,在我认识的pilot当中,大家都是respect each other and help each other out的,你的同事。。。

最后那几张是一个pilot朋友拍的(我现在还是novice,飞行时还是集中精神control & observe,希望日后也能拍些靓照啦)
接下来的日记我也会share一些我认为很美的照片。

BTW:今晚刚开完club的committee会议,接下来要筹备组织Millennium Cup*,gotta be fun
* Millennium Cup--是Skyhigh Paragliding Club每年一度专门为刚毕业的新pilot和novice pilot而组织的fun competition(or fun game)

--------------Flinders Flying-------------
Australia has the longest coastal line in the world,在last xmas,我和LP开车从Melbourne沿着海岸线一直开到Sydney-->Near Port Macquaurie。最深印象就是Australia的beach好漂亮,而开始paragliding以来,让我更多的机会到过了好多好漂亮的coastal town & beach。Flinders就是其中之一。

Flinders: 从Melbourne往南开车1.5hrs,可以途经Mornington Peninsula(大家有空也不妨到这个relaxing holiday coastal town轻松轻松)

这是从Flinders Monument望向海,可以看到停着几条小船,海边有一个car park,周末基本上都拍上几十辆车。


好些人走到这伸出海上百米的木X上(不知道它的名字),钓鱼,看海,或者随便坐坐也是一种享受,拍照当天我们就看见几个lady全副装备的去diving潜水去了。
对面的小岛in the distance should be Philip Island(这个大家都好熟悉,不多说了)

好了,基本上跑题了,像是旅游杂记了,还是说回我的paragliding吧
Flinders是很受novices pilot欢迎的launch site,一来是离melbourne不远,二来是novice rating(每个site都有不同的take off 难度 rating,从novice--intermediate--advanced),而且Flinders的take off和landing相对容易。
可是今天的wind was a little bit cross,但这位pilot(20多年前从菲律宾移民过来,56岁的IT consultant)的GH水平还未能顺利应付这种condition,于是就wing上树了。当然我是马上帮忙解绳啦(毕竟我是有“经验”的


经过1.5小时,终于把wing从树上拿下来,然后要开始untangle the lines

到我们把伞untangle后,wind已经pick up,and became too strong to launch了,也就是这一天我没有飞成功,灰溜溜的折返了(其实也开始习惯了para-waiting了)

当然,一次para-waiting不会让我们这些addictive的weather slaves放弃的,终于某一天,我还是成功的在Flinders飞了,而且第一次飞就遇上perfect condition,飞了2.5小时,如果不是人有三急,当天还可以飞更久 (教训一:起飞前尽量take a leak,该把多余的水放的放)

这是我冬天的unprofessional“飞行服装”,刚好match我的wing的颜色,都是从国内的迪佧侬买的,质量还不错,很适合outdoor

这个角度可以看到landing beach,好些family喜欢在beach岸上的草地上把车停下,野餐!:)

这是一位pilot在飞行时给我拍的,从这个角度可以看到起飞场(那条长型的小跑道),背后就是诺大的Flinders Golf Course

对上一次在Flinders飞是Melbourne Cup Day,当天的condition也不错,风力相对较强,所以有一个hang glider joined us and had a bit of fun

--------地面训练(斗伞)Ground Handling篇-------
日记写到这篇,相信已经写了好些TX们都不明白或者不感兴趣的东西了。没办法,必须得承认这不是一个大众运动项目,参加了就变成了‘孤独’的‘Minority’了
没事,自己enjoy就行了

今天不写去哪飞,写一下ground handling(GH)
之前已经说过GH是每一个paragliding pilot必须时常进行的练习,不管是新手或者是经验丰富的pilot,regular GH or regular flying is the only way to keep your skills current,所以我一有空,condition一对,就去靠我最近的St Kilda Marina Park做GH(也就是在这里,我体验了第一次的‘上树’经验)

几乎每一次去St Kilda do GH,LP都陪我一起去,所以在我练习的时间,LP就给我拍了不少照片,也拍了好些附近景色的照片(对paragliding一点兴趣都没有的TX也可以参考一下,这里是个families嬉戏的好地方),好了,不多说了,还是发片片吧。

以前的上司有一条boat,他常去钓鱼,不过要老早就起床,所以还不是我的favorite outdoor stuff so far

下面的也是GH的照片,不过是另外一天,是一个weekend的midday,the wing was blowing out,so no flying then.

GH多了,水平当然就不断进步了

当天有好几个pilot也来一起GH,其中一个是挺有名的一个top pilot,他是ABC,祖父辈从HK来Au,所以一点中文都不懂 当天他在练习他的Tandem glider

Nictan:paragliding是比较刺激的,或者另外一个字形容得比较贴切一点,就是:爽!
这个运动很特别,有些人会很怕,敬而远之,不管你怎说,打死也不尝试;
on the other hand,有些人就特喜欢,当作是一个梦想地追求,而一旦尝试了,就马上上瘾了。
很明显,我是后者

看起来对天气的要求高了点.墨尔本雨水不多,倒是比较适合.

现在连晚上去打羽毛球的时间都没有.去飞的梦想看来要很若干年后才行了.

多谢edin和小鱼的理想---最近忙着准备Xmas的安排,忙着关注天气,前天周末又到Flinders飞了一个小时,爽啊!being lazy to update my diary here

Let's talk about an event in our Skyhigh Club--Easter Fly In
Location: Bright (前面简单介绍过这个地方了,就是上次我took tandem的地方)
Time: Easter Long weekend 2008

话不多说了,还是发片吧


大众人马heading up to launch--from this angle, you could tell the crowd was forming


这个角度就看得更清楚有多少人了(统计下来总共有50-70个pilots参加了这次活动),我在unpacking my gear and about to do the pre-flight check,long queue though (launch的地面是最近renovated的,这种材料很好,好像是用网球场常用的)


大家开始排队take off了(当然是观察和assess condition后,找准时机才起飞啦,什么是好时机?就是等一个比较好的thermal cycle到来时,这里不详说了,恐怕会很techniqual了)


我们的Easter Fly In是一个Team Based的event,由advanced pilot leads a team with less experienced and novice pilot,每个team根据自己的水平制定一些task,也参加organized的一些task,好像spot landing, ballast dropping etc; 这位女pilot是我的team leader,也是我们的senior safety officer,她有about 10 years of experience,是HGFA的former board member,在这个圈子里很资深。照片中我正准备set up to launch and she was giving me site briefing.


这是我第一次的inland solo flight,off I go!因为我本人不在Bright took course, so it was my very first time to fly there solo as well, a bit nervous, as inland flying is very different from coastal flying.


over Bright township--在这几天的event内,我飞了5次,基本上每次都是sleddy(也就是起飞后就马上head to landing zone降落,没有成功soaring或thermaling),最长的一次飞行时间是16分钟,stay up for a bit while, not sure if it was a thermal or not, any way, I was 十分满足了。


这是honey从我们stayed in 的cabbin往起飞场山上照的,我们住的caravan park就在landing zone附近,叫Outdoor Inn,是paragliding or hang gliding pilots飞Mystic(Bright的主要起飞场)的“集中营”


caravan park一角,it's not the luxury type of accommodation,but it's really close to 大自然,park里面种了好些苹果树和栗子树,任guest摘的,我们也摘了几个玩着尝尝,蛮酸的 5


这是离Mystic 40分钟车程的另一个site,叫Pines,当天Mystic的condition不适合起飞,大伙就奔这来了。
看这幅图,让人有一种要do XC的雄心壮志

当我做好准备时,wind已经是over the back了(所有起飞和降落都必须是into the wind,也就是逆风,大部分的air craft都是遵从这个道理的),因为是傍晚,launch的山头一面开始降温,温差的原因,风就从原来的facing the launch changed to over the back了(详细原理也不详说了,因为这是比较technical的东西,我也不是100%sure,而且说了让大家更迷糊),大家可以留意图中靠右边挂在树上的一条streamer(I was looking at it)的方向就知道了---所以,bad luck,I had to aboard and pack my gear and head back---another para-waiting,所以说不是你想随时飞就可以飞的,必须得condtion对才行,并不是大众想像中的那么crazy或‘乱来’的,当中的学问可是多着呢。


Bright是VIC的一个holiday的好去处,是alpine region,好多可玩的活动like Mountain Biking, bush walking, horse riding etc
个人很推荐family或者喜欢亲近大自然的TX们来玩,下面是官方的连接

Hey guys...
I'm up in Bright at the moment.
Had just got a good flight this morning, ridge soaring and thermal flying for 40 mins, the air became bumpy and wind became too cross just before I landed.
So far, got 4 flights up in Bright, 2 sleddies and 2 thermic flights. learned quite a few stuff and got good experiences, building up my confidence.

It's really nice up here in this small town, very relaxing. People are swimming, mountain biking, hiking, fishing,BBQ,camp fire etc...
haven't got any flying photos yet coz honey was staying in the camp when I was flying.


kids are having fun floating in the river, I want to do it next time.


we were relaxing, having a nap and a picnic just next to the river, listening to the sounds of water and the kids' laughter. nice...


in the evening, honey drove up to the launch under my supervision, it's really nice to have the whole launch on our own


different feeling looking down at the town when I was not about to launch, more relaxing...

Date: 04/01/2009
Launch site: Mystic, Bright Victoria
Flight: tandem XC 25km
Max height: 2200m asl
Flight duration: 1 hour 15 mins

The last day we stayed in Bright, LP did an awesome XC tandem flight with one of our experienced pilots.
The condition was not that good as most of the pilots had landed soon after launch.
While they made to a town around 25 km from launch, good job, well done!


This was the pilot in control, he is the same pilot who did a tandem with me one year ago. 10 years of experience.


As I said that the condition was not that good, so after launch, they kept scratching for a bit while, patiently 'kicking the trees'


hooked in a strong climb, they started to center the thermal core


getting high, above launch, which is a good sign!


after a few more thermal climbing, they decided to head south, attempting to glide to another ridge, hoping for another thermal


And they did get one and kept climbing...look at the wing, looks cool!


They kept climbing up, with plenty of height, they decided to head far...where to go? LP with her legs pointed to a town far away


on the way to the next destination, they kept thermalling, climbing...making sure with plenty of height, awesome!


Eventually they landed at the south end of Harrietville, about 25km from Bright, just next to Mount Feathertop.
Pilot Clinton was trying to organize retrieve...
Finally it was me who retrieve them


Had a great flight at the last day of the holiday. Happy winner for the day!
The max height of their flight was 2200m, max climb rate was 6m/s, max sink was -5.7m/s, it's really bumpy though!

in 10 days of stay in Bright, there were only 4 days flyable, a little bit disappointed, everyone said that it is the worst season in 10 years...looks like global warming is really doing something bad to our lives.
But for myself, I'm quite happy to have done my first thermal flying, and a few more later on.
The best thing was that I did my first little XC flight!  
even it was not a big distance, but it's my very first one!...I was really excited and proud of myself.
max height of my XC flight was 1677m, max climb was 5.2m/s, max sink was -3.7m/s,it's rough too!


Keep up the effort!
Fly high and land safe!:)

Hi Huntman,


long time no speak, merry xmas and happy new year to you too!
We did have a good time up in Bright.
The flying season will last to around early May in the Apline area here.
So I will go back in Australia Day and Easter.

For the insurance--
When you join HGFA, the membership fee has include the third party insurance cover, that's why this is compulsory, like we pay the third party insurance for driving a vehicle.
Membership fee is currently $350 per annum (CTP insurance + monthly soaring magazine + funding to state body)
most of the pilots here have their ambulance insurance, not sure how much it costs, roughly $60-100 per annum.

Other than these, it's all up to you how much you wanna pay for insurance for your personal cover.
For myself, I have Medibank Extras,about $70/month I guess. can't remember its cover range, roughly would be
1) private hospital
2) dentist
3) glasses
4) physio
It's not really relating to paragliding though.

BTW: how's your plane? have you had some flying lately?

Haven't updated this post for a while as I'm busy with flying and organizing a novice competition recently.

This is a friendly competition designed for introducing new and novice pilots to various flying sites as well as providing a supervised environment for these pilots to increase their skills and experience.
Last weekend was the 1st round.
It was great! 13 novice pilots turned up and had fun.

Date: 17/01/09 Saturday
Site: Flinders


It's really a big party




One of the task that day was 'Graceful Launch', the winner is a senior novice, 54 years old and 54 hrs air time


With the help from our Safety Officer, this pilot had his first coastal soaring.


Task-2 for the day was spot landing, is to land as close as you can to that circle


He landed right on the centre of the circle! how good is that!

Date: 18/01/09 Sunday
Site: Mt Broughton (Yea)
The second day we picked an inland site near Yea(2 hrs drive from Melbourne)


Safety Officer was giving site briefing to all of us.
Task for the day is to get 3 waypoints(not with GPS but visualized), that means we selected 3 spots, pilots tried to get enough height and glide to above that point, then top up the height by thermalling and glide to the next point.


We call the first one to launch as 'Wind dummy', which means he/she would have to test the condition and everybody else will judge what the condition our there likes.


This pilot had his first flight after getting his license. So excited!


So more experienced pilot or lucky ones had hooked up good thermal and climbed out.
The best distance for that day was about 35km from launch flown by an experienced pilot from Italy.

It's so good we had flying on both days, we are all grateful that the weather god had smiled on us :)

This is my personal flight log, PLEASE don't misunderstand that I was trying to persuade anyone to join this sport. I'M NOT
Instead, based on what you said, I think I can't be sure if you are ready to do any aviation sport yet, or better to say any sport inherent with hazard.
Put it this way, It's NO ONE but Yourself who is responsible for your own safety.
A piece of advice, Do some more research and think it over seriously.
Besides, I'm a paraglider pilot, not hang glider.

Back to your question--Normally every pilot would have reserve parachute in his/her harness.
I will post something about an organized workshop for stimulate reserve deployment in our club.

(紧急情况)抛降落伞-模拟练习

Normally every harness would have a reserve parachute attached, and would be deployed in emgency situation.


Swing & Fling
___simulate reserver parachut deployment practice.

Each year during September, just before the start of the summer season, the club organises a number of swing and fling nights. We hoist our pilots up on ropes in a gym and as pilots swing across the gym, they can practice throwing their reserves, then watch and participate as their reserves are repacked by suitably qualified professionals.

Australia Day Long Weekend 2009-Flying in Bright.

This is my 1st anniversary to Bright(23rd floor)
Still remember first time I came here, I was still a totally fresh newbie from school, trying to get my first flight, instead I got a massive knots of my wing and got sorted out and luckily got a tandem.
Now, with 22 hr air time and my 1st XC record, I'm trying to do some more thermalling practice and hopefully beat my PB(personal best)

Saturday 24/01/09
Non-flyable day, too much over the back.
So got some sleep and watch DVD with LP, quite relaxing though.

Sunday 25/01/09
Morning: launched at around 11:00am, very bumpy under the inversion at around 1200m-1400m, got quite a few pitching and flapping, fighting and fighting, trying to push through the inversion, too hard, traffic was quite heavy, 18 gliders at a time, not so comfortable, decided to land.
Max height:1414m
Max climb: 4.2m/s
Max sink: -3.5m/s
Duration: 1 hr
Not bad, longest inland fight

Afternoon: got up on launch at 2:30pm,the cycle was too strong,para-waiting...until 4:40pm, launched, still very bumpy,inversion was still low, again tried to get through but couldn't. When the sun started to go down, thermal got weaker, more and more gliders sinked and landed, I kept fighting in the weak lift, scratching around, then I was the only one in the air,so nice to have the sky by my own! a bit later I landed too. Very good weak thermalling practice.
Max height:1217m
Max climb: 4.5m/s
Max sink: -3.7m/s
Duration: 1 hr 20 mins

Monday 26/01/09 Aussie Day and our Chinese new year
launched at about 12:00pm, again very bumpy, even bumpier than yesterday, got serious collapse shortly after launch, a bit air sick, stayed calm and continue to fight, again fighting the inversion at 1300m-1500m for quite a while, traffic was even worse,more than 30 gliders at a time! bloody hell! very busy!!! going up and down between 1100m-1500m for quite a while, then more people sinked down and landed, some headed to somewhere(XC), I kept fighting, eventually I pushed through the inversion and started to climb from 1500m in a steady weak lift, watching the vario jumping through 1600m...then 1700m...wow...I'm having a new height record(the old one was 1677m)...then kept working hard...then 1800m...wow...then above 1900m...oh my goodness...I'm very happy and excited...it's a bit cold up there. Can I push through the 2000m barrier?...I was trying...headed towards a ridge in my self-set task and a new XC spot, made it..happy, but hit the massive sink at average -4.5m/s...shit!...within minutes, I was at 1100m...kept fighting, back up to 1300m...tried to head back to launch to top up, but too much head wind and sink, 5 mins later I landed. Very very happy and proud of myself.

Last week, when Melbourne started to recover from the once in 100 years heat, I headed up to Bright to trace up the ongoing heat.


Saturday
Woke up at 5:00am and headed off at 6:00am, 4hrs later arrived camp krusty, tagged along the Mystic Cup(one of the most popular paragliding competitions in Vic) crew up the hill, set up, para-waiting for 1hr, launched, broken climbs and massive sinks everywhere, bombed out after scratching around for 25mins, very frustrated, joined by 3 more experienced guys, all saying too stable, I felt the same, even no bubble above LP, first time landed so smoothly, felt like on the beach. Didn't get a lift back up the hill via the unfriendly alternative access, that's it for the day for me! pretty disappointed.
Lesson: should have launched later. Let it cook hotter.

Sunday
With the frustration yesterday, I set my task for the day as 'Don't bomb out'. Up the hill, set up, all saying more stable than yesterday, task for Mystic is not open-distance anymore but triangle waypoints, not a perfect day indication, para-waited, until I saw all the guns are about to launch, I launched, sink to 100m below launch, shit! kicking the trees, following the footstep of the guns, I scratched and climbed, and climbed, the guns are aiming for their 1st waypoint at blackfellows(don't know where it is, should be on the way to Mt Buffalo), I kept climbing further out behind launch, by the time I started to check out my vario reading, it's above 1700m already, woohoo, 1st task accomplished. I was alone, no other way to locate thermal except feeling the bum and listening to the vario, what a concentration! a few minutes later, I broke through 2000m barrier! yeah! my new height! This is a surprise! Happy to land now. looked down, it's already behind Wandi, two cumulus clouds in the distance, no way to get there I guess, decided to glide down, aiming at LP(landing paddock), so nice to glide...nice and cool up there (max temp is 44 degree on the ground),going too slow, detour back to Wandi, hover above the small hill behind and paddock for about 10 minutes or so, good scratching practice, and landed. pretty happy!...honey retrieved me and we headed back to Melbourne.

In summary, early wake up, long way drive, cooked in the heat, bombed out, hmm...it's still rewarding for the last bit :)

上周六重访 Bells Beach,
曾多次 bombed out, 决心要征服它,这次 mission accomplished, happy

hazy day, no blue sky, but still enjoyable.
