AUSTRALIANS who buy the New iPad will not be able to access 4G on the device until 2015.
Being able to operate on the super fast mobile network was a major selling point for the New iPad, but Australians must wait another three years before they'll be able to use it.
Optus was the country’s first telco to successfully test 4G on the 700Mhz spectrum - which is one of two bandwidths the New iPad is compatible with.
The Federal Government is not due to auction off the spectrum until the end of the year.
But an Optus spokesperson told news.com.au that no telco will have access to the 700MHz spectrum until 2015.
This means Australians can kiss any hope of having 4G on their New iPad goodbye for at least the next few years.
“We recently tested 4G services on the 700MHz band in Bendigo, Victoria, the first carrier to successfully conduct a trial in this spectrum band,” the spokesperson said.
“However, early indications suggest that no Australian carrier will have access to the 700MHz band until 2015.”
Optus and Vodaphone did not respond to News.com.au requests for information about what they plan to do with their 2100MHz spectrum.
Telstra announced in October 2010 that they would be switching off its 2100MHz 3G networks by August this year, theoretically freeing it up for 4G. However, a Telstra spokesperson told news.com.au the telco plans to reuse the band in their Next G network.
Telstra’s 4G network runs on a 1800MHz spectrum. The New iPad 4G LTE system works only on 700MHz and 2100MHz spectrum, which means no iPad 4G for anyone.
Not until 2015. It’s going to be a long wait.
