International Driving Permits (IDP's) are recommended when you intend driving overseas.

In Australia, the Government appointed the Australian Automobile Association (AAA) as the only authority to issue permits. In Victoria, the RACV, as a constituent member of the AAA, is authorised to issue IDP's through its RACV shops (external website).

An IDP is a widely recognised document and is useful for photo identification purposes. You may also need one to rent a car overseas.

Using an International Driving Permit in Victoria
An international driving permit represents a translation of an overseas driver licence. It has no validity on its own and must accompany a current overseas driver licence issued from your home licensing authority overseas.
An international driving permit is only valid if it:
complies with the UN convention for International Driving Permits, and
is issued by the country the overseas driver licence is issued in; and
is accompanied by a current overseas driver licence from the same country the permit was issued in.

International Driving Permits  
An International Driving Permit (IDP) or International Drivers Licence is a United Nations sanctioned document that translates your driving classification into nine different languages and is recognised in over 150 countries.

Even if you are not planning to drive while overseas, an IDP is useful to carry in case of an emergency and you require an additional form of identification.

Information changes frequently in member countries. For more information check the AAA International Handbook for Motorists (PDF 1MB/72 pages).

Please note that no International Driving Permits will be processed from 24th Dec to 2nd Jan. Please go to your local NRMA branch for assistance.

  

Why do I need an International Driving Permit?

An international drivers licence allows you to drive overseas without further tests or applications, provided your Australian driver's licence is still valid
You are required to carry your Australian Drivers' Licence with your IDP whilst overseas
It is also a requirement for renting a car in many countries. Failure to do so may constitute a criminal or civil offence & may have more serious consequences
It can  trigger an exclusion under your travel insurance policy if claiming for loss caused while driving a motor vehicle overseas
It can be used as an additional form of identification if your passport is locked away in a safe place
In most cases, your current Australian driving licence is not enough alone when driving in a foreign country. It must be complemented with an International Driving Permit
How long does it last & can I renew it overseas?

Your IDP is valid for twelve months or expires at the same time as your Australian driving licence, which ever comes first.
Yes you can renew your international drivers licence from overseas. Simply follow the instructions on the application form and return it to NRMA
How do I get an International Driving Permit?

Only NRMA and associated Members of the Australian Automobile Association (AAA) are authorised to issue international drivers licences. You can pick one up by:
Visiting your local NRMA office where it can be issued over the counter whilst you wait or
Simply complete the International Driving Permit application form (PDF 412KB/2 pages) and post it to NRMA
What do I need to apply for an International Driving Permit?

To apply you must:

Be 18 years or older
Hold a valid Australian Drivers Licence (either provisional or full licence)
Attach a copy of your valid Australian Drivers Licence (front and back)
Provide a recent (no more than two years old) passport sized photograph, similar size to your passport, no larger than 3.5cm x 4.5cm. (Please note for the photo to be valid it needs to be on photographic paper)
Complete this International Driving Permit application form (PDF 412KB/2 pages)
Include your payment of $39 plus express postage costs as detailed on the application form, if you require the IDP to be sent to you
IMPORTANT NOTE: While the NRMA takes all steps to ensure accuracy of the information provided, it must be noted that requirements may change in individual countries and motorists are encouraged to check with the club or local authority in the country they plan to visit either prior to or on arrival in that country to ensure all IDP requirements are complied with.

中国是不承认国际驾照的，但可以将澳洲驾照（必须是full licence）转成中国驾照，具体方法是：

持澳洲驾照来中国开车，首先要换成中国的驾照。具体办理要去您所在城市的车辆管理所，需要本人亲自去办理，只需简单笔试，通过笔试且交管所体检合格后即可申请申领机动车驾驶证，申领手续很简单。

持境外机动车驾驶证申领机动车驾驶证
所需资料

1、《机动车驾驶证申请表》；(注：点击此处下载“《机动车驾驶证申请表》”表单文件，注意有正反两页。)
2、《机动车驾驶人身体条件证明》；(注：点击此处下载“《机动车驾驶人身体条件证明》”表单文件，注意有正反两页。)

3、有效境外驾驶证原件及复印件。注：任何国家或组织签发的国际驾驶证及实习驾驶证、临时驾驶证不予受理，部分准驾车型标注不明确的境外驾驶证须出具官方说明文本，境外驾照并需提供中文翻译件（交管所会告诉你当地认可的翻译机构，然后找他们翻译）。

4、申请人身份证明原件及复印件：

（1）境外人员提供其入境时所持的护照或其他旅行证件，在签证期内，进入我国境内居（停）留期为六个月以上的有效签证或者居留许可，以及提供本市公安机关开具的反映其住址的居留证或《境外人员临时住宿登记表》的原件及复印件。

（2）本市户籍居民提供《居民身份证》；

（3）外地户籍居民提供《居民身份证》及我市公安机关核发的居住、暂住身份证明；

（4）其他请参见《关于申请人身份证明的补充说明》；

5、护照原件及复印件。

6、提供本人在本市任何一间可照驾驶证相片照相馆的照相回执（回执6个月内有效），须自备四张驾驶证专用照片（两张分别贴申请表用及体检表格 ，两张用于制作驾驶证）。

7、此项业务不可代办。


如果在中国没开过车，建议还是不要换了，因为要在中国开车水平必须足够强大，路况复杂程度比澳洲高了n个数量级，只熟悉澳洲驾驶到中国去开车只能祝好运了。
