Boron / borax / boric acid
'Borax and boric acid are the best ways to prevent reoccurence, and will also help fireproof areas where they are applied. They work because boron is poison to micro-organisms (and insects), but not to humans (except in high ingested amounts*). Borax penetrates porous materials, and will inhibit future mould growth (good builders will use either borax or boric acid in the first place). Any borax left on the surface, will absorb over time with moisture in the air, so there is no need to wipe off the borax.
Generally you mix borax with water, 1/4 cup borax to 2 cups of water. You can make it more concentrated if you want a scrubbing paste.
*Obviously don't ingest them unless you know what you are doing - boric acid becomes toxic between 5-20g ingested orally, and borax is toxic after 15g-20g. '
