Barking dog, Luffy
Most of this forum visitors know Luffy as WaterMelon Luffy, or broken Leg Luffy or perfect dog lover Luffy (with Da Zhuang, of course), but I bet very few people know Barking dog Luffy. Here is how it happened.
Luffy loved barking. The first day when Luffy arrived our house, he barked A LOT! He almost barked all night long when we were struggling every night. We did as what booked said to ignore him as much as we can during the night, but that just didn’t work for him. In the first week, Luffy barked, at second Week, Luffy barked, the whole first month Luffy barked a lot. As long as Luffy didn’t see us, he barked continuously. So we knew, Luffy was a barking dog.
In second month, the situation got even worse, because we must move home from a house to an apartment which we would have lots of close neighbour, left right, up and down. Luckly, we had my mother in law lived with us, so Luffy didn’t bark much since she was at home most of time. As matter of fact, that’s the main reason we bought Luffy. My in law could look after him during the day since she will stay in Australia for good. Luffy also could be company to in law so she wouldn’t get too bored, so it was win-win situation. That was the plan.
Although my in law spent most of time at home, but eventually, we all need to disappear once a while. There was one beautiful evening we went out for dinner with friends, all of us. So we locked Luffy in the balcony by himself and gave him plenty of toys and food, then we left.
After 2 hours dinner, we were on the way of home. We could hear Luffy’s barking miles away, loud and clear. So we rushed home and stopped him barking. But it was too late, on the second day, we received a note from a mysterious neighbour. The note said your dog barked so loud and so long which was not right for the dog and also they couldn’t rest either. You need to fix it immediately or we would report to council.
I was so scared and horrified with possible consequence. A barking dog would be forced out from any apartment, easily. So in terms of amending the damage, I printed out few copies of beautiful apologize letter with Luffy picture in it and the letter wrapped with a sweet chocolate bar and left in all my neighbours’ mailbox in the apartment entry. In this letter, we promised we would keep eyes on Luffy and make sure it won’t happen again. So we did say it, but we were all worried because Luffy was a barking dog.
When we were busy on apologizing and make sure Luffy always be companied by someone at anytime during the day, we learned another and even worse news. Our in law couldn’t stay in Australia and must go back to China soon. That means Luffy would be left at home by himself for 12 hours during the day and no one could feed him, looked after him, at ALL!!
At the day I realized what was going to happen, I sit down on the floor and hold Luffy in my arms. Although he was with us only for few months, but what about the promised we gave to him to look after him to love him for all his life? I don’t know when my tears started to bust out of my eyes and everything was instantly blurry. I cried, very loudly.
My wife sited next to me and tried to talk to me, but nothing came out of her mouth because she was overwhelmed and joined me as well. Few months old Luffy didn’t seem to understand why his mommy and Daddy crying so loud, he twisted his head and staring to us.. all the time….
It was darkest day in our family, because we all know Luffy was a barking dog living in a apartment.
After tears dried out, we started to fight with what we got to keep Luffy. We printed out lots of advertisement and, in that, we tried to find someone who could look after Luffy during the day. There were no restrictions, only 1 condition, live close to where we live so we can pick up Luffy every night. I jumped on the forum and asked friends and see anyone who could help us to take care of Luffy, we would pay that person.
I put this advertisement to all mailboxes in our building, next building, we tried all my friends close by, we tried everything…. But no one could help us. At the end, we have to make few other plans, prepared the worst, to be fine by council, or even have to relocate again.
The judgement day finally arrived.
Luffy was left alone at home for 12 hours with a timer feeding machine …
We didn’t talk much on the way of home at that night, we were worried so much. Talking was not helping. Jump off the train, 50 meters away from building, no Luffy’s barking. Arrived the building, no luffy’s bark. Standing in front of our door, put our ears on the door, still no barking.
Luffy was not at home? We put key out and opened the door. The black and white mark dashed into our arms like lightning bolt. He was jumping up and down. He whining and he cried, he used his body rubbing our legs and begging for our tough. He complained how long he had waited for us and how much he missed us, he did a lot at that day, but he only didn’t do one thing.
Luffy DIDN’T bark.
Sometimes, miracle does happen. Maybe it was long talking we had with Luffy, maybe Luffy finally grow over the barking age, maybe Luffy finally understood how much we worried when he barked.
Luffy stopped barking.
He completely stopped barking to certain stand that some of our new neighbours even didn’t know Luffy existed after they moved in building for months. When they saw Luffy in the hallway finally, they asked,
“Is that dog living here? Seriously? I never heard his barking. “
Luffy is not a barking dog anymore. Luffy got new name in our building. A dog who doesn’t bark.
