Why blueberries are good for your toddler
We have all heard that blueberries are full of antioxidants and are the ultimate superfood, but why are these seasonal berries so good for you and your toddler?
Health benefits of blueberriers
1. They are full of antioxidants
Blueberries are one of the richest sources of antioxidants in the fruit world. Antioxidants are chemical substances that help our bodies to fight off free radicals. If free radicals are not kept under control, they can cause many health problems, such as development of cancer and heart disease. The main antioxidants in blueberries are called anthocyanins and give the berries their brilliant colour.
2. They reduce the risk of urinary tract infections (UTI)
Similar to cranberries, blueberries also contain antioxidant proanthocyanidins. These chemical compounds reduce the impact of bacteria that cause UTIs, making blueberries a great fruit choice for your toddler.
3. They are good for brain function
Studies in animals have shown promising results linking eating blueberries to improved brain function. An improvement in memory and motor function was seen in both aged lab rats, and those with Alzheimer-like symptoms that were fed blueberries. Further studies are being carried out but the positives of adding them to your shopping list is clear.
4. They contain Vitamin C and Vitamin KVitamin C helps the body to heal wounds, absorb iron from foods and fight infections, plus it contributes to healthy gums, teeth and bones. It also has antioxidant properties, and has been shown to reduce the risk of cancers of the gastrointestinal tract (stomach, oesophagus and pancreas). Vitamin K – needed for blood to clot properly – is also present in blueberries.
Blueberry recipes for your toddler
•Blueberry Pancakes are a great family breakfast when you have more time on your hands. To save time, you could prepare the mixture the night before.
•For something different, try making a dessert pizza. A tortilla can be used as the base. Spread it with ricotta cheese or yoghurt before adding blueberries and other fruits as a topping.
•Blueberries are a fantastic to add to homemade muffins. Make your favourite muffin recipe healthier by substituting half the white flour with wholemeal. If your blueberries always sink to the bottom of muffins, coat them with flour before adding them to the mixture.
•Combine blueberries with yoghurt to make these Strawberry and Blueberry Icy Treats.
While blueberries are in season, pop them in your shopping trolley and you and your family can enjoy them every day.
