First home buyers might have to spend more to get on the property ladder in Sydney than anywhere else in the country but it seems they also have fewer regrets than most. A survey has found that more than eight in 10 of these buyers nationally are happy with their first property purchase, while fewer than one in five have regrets.
But of these first home buyers, remorse is felt most acutely in Victoria (20.6 per cent) and Queensland (20.1), followed by South Australia (18.4), NSW (16.6) and Western Australia (10), the survey by Mortgage Choice found.
There were 910 respondents to the online survey of first-home buyers who bought in the past two years. Nationally the biggest regret was buying in the wrong area, followed by not shopping around enough for the right property and not waiting until they could afford their ideal property.
In NSW one of the biggest regrets felt by first home buyers was not buying a cheaper house or unit.
Advertisement However, the survey found that first timers appear to be doing their homework, inspecting on average 21 properties nationally before they buy.
Almost a quarter of all buyers look at more properties than that, while more than 40 per cent inspect 10 or fewer.
In NSW they look at 23 properties on average, the highest in the country.
A Mortgage Choice spokeswoman, Belinda Williamson, said the hours spent planning and considering their options saved first home buyers from making a decision that could cost them financially or leave them dissatisfied.
"It makes sense to invest the appropriate amount of time into researching and viewing potential properties to make sure you are happy with the final decision," she said.
