CONSTRUCTION has begun on Melbourne's new 120m-high wheel at Docklands.
The first support columns for the $100 million Southern Star Observation Wheel are on site at Waterfront City.
The wheel, which is expected to be operating by the end of next year, will stand almost as high as the Bolte Bridge ``goalposts''.
The wheel will feature 21 air-conditioned cabins capable of carrying up to 20 people, similar to the London Eye.
The support columns, which weigh about 100 tonnes each, will be erected in May. The total amount of steel in the structure is 1200 tonnes.
