$10 MILLION GREEN RESEARCH CENTRE TO OPEN IN MELBOURNE
From the Minister for Information & Communications Tech
Wednesday, 28 April 2010

A new $10 million Centre for Energy Efficient Telecommunications (CEET) will be established at the University of Melbourne, in collaboration with communication services company Alcatel-Lucent, creating 22 highly skilled local research jobs.

Cabinet Secretary Tony Lupton joined Alcatel-Lucent CEO Ben Verwaayen today to announce the new centre, which will create a new Australian research hub in Melbourne for energy efficient telecommunications.

Mr Lupton said the CEET was being delivered by Alcatel-Lucent’s research arm Bell Labs and the University of Melbourne and would be one of Australia’s leading ICT research facilities.

“This new $10 million centre will bring together some of the best telecommunications researchers from Australia and around the world, creating at least 22 new Victorian jobs, including 11 PhD research roles over the next three years,” Mr Lupton said.

“The new facility will focus on reducing the energy consumption of telecommunications networks and build on the University of Melbourne’s focus into green technologies.”

Melbourne University was also involved in the Bell Labs-led global initiative GreenTouch that is aimed at dramatically reducing the energy consumption of communications networks.

With a broader research scope, CEET will complement the GreenTouch initiative, whose founding members include the Institute for a Broadband Enabled Society (IBES), the University of Melbourne, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, Huawei, Telefonica, AT&T, China Mobile and Freescale Semiconductor.

“This is another demonstration of Melbourne as a leading global location for high end ICT research, especially in the field of telecommunications,” Mr Lupton said.

“No other city in Australia has the telecommunications capability, such a skilled workforce ready to attract a facility like this – Melbourne will be best placed to take advantages of the NBN when it is rolled out.

“Academic and private sector experts will be able to work together like never before to develop new green communications products to export to the world. This new centre will reinforce Victoria’s leadership in developing innovative and job creating technology.”

CEET will enhance Victoria’s broader telecommunication research capability, while contributing to the dedicated broadband research undertaken by IBES, at the University of Melbourne.

Mr Ben Verwaayen said finding ways to reduce energy consumption is a challenge that our society faces and that our industry is well positioned to address.

“CEET is an example of an initiative that has the potential to play a decisive role in meeting this challenge because it has the key ingredients for success: partners with deep research experience and complementary goals,” he said.

Professor Rod Tucker from the University of Melbourne’s Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering said teaming up with Bell Labs, world renowned for its ability to generate breakthrough innovations, was an exciting step for Melbourne University.

“It adds significant expertise to our strong track record of research into energy efficient telecommunications,” Professor Tucker said.
