Dollar closes sharply up
From: AAP
April 27, 2006
THE dollar closed more than half a US cent stronger today, boosted by softness in its US counterpart and the prospect of a local interest rate rise next week.
At 1700 AEST the local unit was trading at $US0.7526/29, well above yesterday's close of 0.7458/63.
Today it reached a low of $US0.7515 and a high of 0.7540.
Macquarie Bank divisional director Geoff Bowmer said that despite recent upbeat US economic data, the US dollar was being sold off.
"Clearly there are more interest rate hikes coming in America but markets just don't want to see these sorts of numbers right now," he said.
The bias in the market was against the US dollar, Mr Bowmer said.

"That helped the Australian dollar get above 75 US cents, as did articles in the media pointing to the possibility of an interest rate hike locally."
However the strength in the Australian dollar and weakness in its US counterpart looked a little overdone, he said.
Commonwealth Bank currency strategist Besa Deda said rate-hike fever was one of the factors supporting the local unit, with a rise next week not to be ruled out.
Next Tuesday the Reserve Bank of Australia will hold its May board meeting, where it will decide whether to change interest rates from the current 5.5 per cent.
Some economists are tipping the central bank will raise rates by a quarter per cent to 5.75 per cent after the meeting. |
