Sports broadcasting will enter a new dimension in 2010 ... the third dimension, as ESPN will unveil the industry's first 3-D network.

ESPN 3D will showcase a minimum of 85 live sporting events during its first year, beginning June 11 with the first 2010 FIFA World Cup match, featuring South Africa versus Mexico, ESPN and ABC Sports president George Bodenheimer announced.

Other events to be produced in 3-D include the 2011 BCS National Championship Game, college basketball and football contests, up to 25 World Cup matches and the Summer X Games. Additional events will be announced at a later date.

"ESPN's commitment to 3-D is a win for fans and our business partners," Bodenheimer said in a statement. "ESPN 3D marries great content with new technology to enhance the fan's viewing experience and puts ESPN at the forefront of the next big advance for TV viewing."

ESPN has been testing ESPN 3D for more than two years, even showing a USC-Ohio State college football game in select theaters and to 6,000 fans at the Galen Center on USC's campus.

"This is a turning point for 3-D," Consumer Electronics Association CEO Gary Shapiro told USA Today.

James Cameron's Avatar pushed new-age 3D into the mainstream and now the big consumer electronics vendors are racing to bring the technology into homes.

At the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, virtually all of the big manufacturers focused on 3D, unveiling a slew of market-ready and prototype 3D TVs, Blu-ray players and home theatre systems.

Some models can even convert existing 2D content – such as home movies and games – into immersive 3D. But of course, dorky 3D glasses are necessary.

The first 3D Blu-ray movie discs will start hitting stores this year and several concerts and big sporting events will be recorded in 3D, including the World Cup and PGA golf.

In the US, broadcasters including ESPN, Fox Sports and Discovery have announced new 3D channels, with plans to broadcast live action sports and other content.

Avatar's producer, Jon Landau, said at the show that he was delighted to be able to bring 3D films into the home. He expects 3D to become ubiquitous.

“From our perspective, 3D is not about gags coming off the screen, it's about creating a window into a world … and a more immersive experience for the viewer,” he said.

In addition to 3D, most of the high-end new TV sets and Blu-ray players are also internet-enabled, transforming them into a platform for accessing a vast array of video content and information from the web.

Samsung introduced a full line-up of 3D flat screen televisions, Blu-ray players and home theatre systems, including several LCD and plasma sets that are capable of converting any 2D content into 3D.

The top-of-the-range LCD model, the 9000 series, is as thin as a pencil thanks to LED backlighting. It is fully WiFi enabled and includes a remote with a colour touch screen on the front that can even preview channels before the user flicks to them on the TV set.

“Consumers are now expecting the same 3D experience they get in theatres at home,” said Tim Baxter, president of Samsung America.

DreamWorks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg announced at Samsung's press conference that a 3D Blu-ray version of Monsters vs. Aliens would be release soon.

“Today, because of 3D, we stand at a watershed moment for the movie industry,” he said.

The 3D TV line is accompanied by a 3D-capable Blu-ray player. The player, TV sets and even Samsung mobiles will have access to the Samsung Apps store, which the company has dubbed “the first multi-device app store”.

Most of Samsung's new TV models can access the internet for downloading widgets and streaming content.

“The TV can be your DJ, your gaming opponent, your travel adviser or even your weather man,” said Baxter.

Sony's global chairman Sir Howard Stringer declared that this year was the “CES 3D show”.

The company is using its line-up of Sony Music artists to make a concerted push into the home 3D space, with a full line-up of 3DTVs, Blu-ray players and professional video recorders.

It confirmed that it will have 3D TV's in the Australian market this year.

Furthermore, Sony said PlayStation 3 owners would receive a free software update to enable the console to support 3D Blu-ray discs. However, a 3D TV is still required.

Taylor Swift sung her hit Love Story live at Sony's press conference and her performance was filmed in 3D. Swift's next tour, which will open in Australia next month, will be documented using Sony's 3D cameras.

Sony also plans to release a disc of Jimi Hendrix concert footage remastered in 3D, while a 3D Blu-ray version of Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs will go on sale this year.

“When the [3D] TVs and players come out in Australia, which I believe is mid-year this year, we will also then have Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs on shelves,” said Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's vice-president of new business development, Rich Marty, in an interview.

“We're entering into a 3D world and everyone sees an enormous opportunity for bringing it to the home.”

But analysts have warned that it could take years for 3D to become widespread in the home as 3D content is still sparse and consumers would be reluctant to buy a new 3D TV so soon after upgrading to high-definition.

Toshiba's main offering for CES was the innovative Cell TV, which is built around the same power plant as the PlayStation 3 – giving it 143 times more processing power than today's TVs.

That extra grunt can be used, like Samsung's 3D TV models, to convert any 2D content into 3D, including home movies and video games.

The web-enabled set is also capable of enhancing low-quality internet video clips, conducting video conferences and automatically adjusting settings to suit the room.

A new wireless-enabled Toshiba BDX3000 3D Blu-ray player and a one terabyte Toshiba Home Entertainment Server can beam content to TVs around the house.

Both LG and Panasonic also demonstrated 3D TVs and Blu-ray players. Certain models from both brands will be able to conduct Skype video conferences using a webcam that attaches to the TV.

Skype CEO Josh Silverman said 2010 would be the year “the television moved from being the centre of entertainment in the home to being the centre of entertainment and communications in the home”.
