PEOPLE living in suburbs with high migrant concentrations have big concerns about safety and are less trusting than the general population.
The Melbourne survey results prompted a Monash University researcher to urge more resources in problem areas to avoid a Cronulla-like riot in Victoria.
Almost 4000 people nationwide took part in the Mapping Social Cohesion 2009 survey funded by the pro-migration Scanlon Foundation, chaired by Melbourne tycoon Peter Scanlon. It follows a similar study done in 2007.
The survey found, despite the economic downturn, only 37 per cent of Australians believe immigration is too high, similar to the 2007 result.
This year, about half the respondents said the impact of immigration on their area was positive. But the study revealed support for a reduction in migration and multiculturalism in high migration suburbs such as Broadmeadows, Coolaroo, Springvale, Dandenong and Noble Park.
n those areas, almost 70 per cent of people born in Australia and with both parents born here thought the migrant intake was too high. Less than a third of them felt safe walking the streets alone at night and only 35 per cent agreed most people could be trusted.

The study's author, Monash academic Prof Andrew Markus, said while attitudes to immigration were remarkably positive, there were tensions in poorer areas with high migrant concentrations.
"It's very significant (for government) to tackle these issues in relatively good times ... than wait till we have another major blow-up like Cronulla," he said.
In 2005, the Sydney beachside suburb was engulfed in race riots involving youths of Australian and Middle Eastern backgrounds.
Mr Scanlon, whose foundation sponsors programs to integrate newly arrived migrants, said more resources were needed to cool multicultural hot spots. He believed a forecast 35 million population by 2050 was too high. |
