Electric Vehicle Registration & Tax: Luxury Car Tax
In Australia, fuel efficient vehicles attract less Luxury Car Tax, leading to a saving of up to $3,715. The Luxury Car Tax is levied at 33c on each dollar above a certain threshold. For most cars that threshold is $76,950 in 2023, however for fuel efficient vehicles including the Tesla Model S, Model 3, Model X, and Model Y, that threshold is $89,332.
The Australian Government has introduced a Treasury Laws Amendment Bill which affects the Fringe Benefit Tax for eligible new zero or low emissions vehicles registered on or after 1 July 2022. Electric vehicles with a vehicle subtotal of $89,332 (including GST) or less are eligible for this FBT exemption. To learn more, visit Treasury Laws Amendment (Electric Car Discount) Bill 2022.
