Record heat, winds, fire alert put state on edge

MELBOURNE recorded its hottest day on record for the first half of September yesterday as wild winds caused chaos, blacking out more than 3000 houses.
In the early hours of this morning, about 200 homes were still without electricity.
Melbourne's temperature climbed to 29.9 degrees at 4.39pm yesterday and was still sitting at 29.5 degrees at 8.30pm. Many regional centres exceeded 30 degrees, Mildura reaching 34 and Yarrawonga 31.
A fire weather warning issued yesterday afternoon for parts of the Mallee district noted that temperatures up to 32 degrees, relative humidity down to 9 per cent and winds to 50 km/h would cause extreme fire danger. The CFA advised people living in areas at risk of fire to activate their bush fire plan.
Wind gusts of more than 100 km/h were recorded in alpine areas and there were gusts of more than 65 km/h at Mount Dandenong and more than 50 km/h at St Kilda and Essendon Airport last night.
Electricity distribution company SP AusNet said strong winds on Friday night brought trees down on to power lines in the Dandenong Ranges, causing widespread blackouts.
Spokeswoman Natasha Whalley said about 25,000 homes lost power when the storm hit about 8pm.
SP AusNet crews worked overnight Friday and all yesterday to restore power to affected areas.
Ms Whalley said that by 8.30pm yesterday there were still about 600 homes without power, with 400 of them, in the Ringwood North, Lilydale and Woori Yallock areas, expected to be reconnected by midnight last night.
Ms Whalley said that because of the many jobs and isolated incidents, about 150 customers in Sherbrooke and 50 in Hurstbridge were expected to be without power until first light today when crews resumed work.
State Emergency Services spokesman Allan Briggs said the SES had received more than 300 emergency calls in the 24 hours to 8pm, with most people reporting power lines down, particularly in the Upper Yarra area. |
