Broker Andrew Frazer,
For years, he has been one of Perth’s most prolific and well-connected stockbrokers, but now Andrew Frazer appears to be losing support from his blue-chip client base.
Mr Frazer, the son-in-law of former West Australian governor Malcolm McCusker and who has previously been bailed out by mining billionaire Andrew “Twiggy” Forrest, yesterday strenuously denied that there were any merits behind the persistent rumblings spreading about his corporate advisory firm Somers & Partners.
Speaking to The Australian, Mr Frazer said he did not believe there were any issues affecting him or the firm. “We are very busy, we’re having a good time and it’s good,” he said.
Yet just hours later came a disclosure from Resolute Mining chief executive John Welborn that more than $2 million of shares had been the subject of an “unauthorised transaction” by his broking firm. The former Wallaby and investment banker informed the Australian Securities Exchange he was investigating how 1.2 million of his Resolute shares came to be transferred into the house account of his broking firm.
Mr Welborn did not name the broking firm and declined to comment when contacted by The Australian, but his disclosure came hours after this paper began making inquiries into rumours Mr Welborn and other business people were increasingly concerned about Somers. Mr Frazer’s clients and backers include Mr Welborn; Duncan Saville, the founder of $US20.5 billion international hedge fund ICM; and Capital Investment Partners managing director Gavin Argyle.
Concerns about Somers have grown since a proposed union between the group and Andrew Chapman’s Merchant Group was abandoned less than three weeks after it was announced in late May. The firms were poised to keep their autonomy under the deal, which would have seen Somers operate under the Merchant brand, but Merchant walked away after 19 days. That sparked speculation about what could have surfaced during due diligence to warrant such an abrupt break.
Mr Chapman yesterday declined to comment.
Somers was the local arm of Canadian brokerage GMP Securities before it was rebranded after GMP withdrew from Australia at the start of this year. There has been a steady stream of workers leaving in recent months, with Somers’ Sydney office closing and the numbers in Perth shrinking.
Mr Frazer is Somers’ managing director and a major shareholder. Those who have dealt with him describe him as smart, affable and a talented institutional stockbroker, but whose willingness to carry high levels of risk sometimes leaves him exposed.
In 2008, he was bailed out by Mr Forrest after he ran up big losses in the global financial crisis. The iron-ore tycoon reportedly took over the mortgage on Mr Frazer’s mansion in Peppermint Grove — it would sell a year later for $10.7m — and bought a 21m boat and beachfront property at Gracetown in WA’s southwest.
One corporate figure, who declined to speak on the record, believed there were “lawyers at 10 paces” as parties considered their positions: “It’s tragic in a way that you have got such a smart guy but he didn’t learn his lesson the last time around.”
Another described Mr Frazer as a “gregarious personality” willing to carry significant risk for the next big trade: “He has always been on the edge of brilliance, but he has also always had that predisposition to ‘risk-on’.”
A spokeswoman for Mr Forrest said he was no longer involved with Mr Frazer. “Our past business interactions with Mr Frazer were honourable. However, we have not had dealings with him for a number of years,” she said.
Businessman Tony Grist, who has crossed paths with Mr Frazer, said he was impressed by his broking abilities. “I think it’s fair to say he is one of the better institutional brokers around the place,” he said.
The most recent accounts for Somers, lodged last year when it was still trading as GMP Securities, showed the company recording a $266,832 loss for 2015 off revenues of $6.3m. Total liabilities were $5.2m. |
