1 TH/s is 1,000,000,000,000 (one trillion) hashes per second

1 Hash = 12,697 FLOPs

33 TH/s=419,001,000,000,000,000 FLOPs= 419 PFLOPS

The defense ministry of the Russian Federation is setting up a unique research laboratory in the ERA technology park, where blockchain technologies will be developed and applied to enhance cybersecurity and fight cyber assaults on critical information infrastructure, Izvestia reports.

Experts believe that blockchain will help the army track the origin of hack attacks and improve its databases security in general.

Blockchain technologies help to trace hack attacks, according to Kaspersky Lab anti-virus expert Alexey Malanov, who added:

"A trespasser often clears the permission log to hide traces of unauthorized access to the device. However, if the log is distributed among several devices (for example, via blockchain technology), this risk can be minimized."
Being an innovative and useful technology, blockchain can be successfully applied both in business and in the army. Viruses change data or software code and try to mask it from data integrity controllers. Meanwhile, blockchain can store the reference code and ensure independent verification and data/code validity.

Apart from the private network used to transfer secret code word information, the defense ministry has Internet-enabled systems and devices. Various administrative departments within the ministry use them for accountancy and workflow management, which makes them potentially vulnerable to hack attacks.

German Klimenko, chairman of the Digital Economy Development Fund, says:

"Currently, the ministry of defense is driving major IT developments and research endeavors, which is a good thing for the industry."
The 8th Directorate of General Staff, which is responsible for information security and state secrets protection, will be in charge of the R&D carried out in the Anapa-based ERA technopark. ERA specializes in building intelligent systems that can be used to detect and prevent computer attacks on information infrastructure of military forces. In the future, it is expected to become an IT industry hub for specialists from all over the country.

NATO and the Pentagon are also researching the "defense" ways of blockchain applications. The technology is actively used to protect systems from cyber attacks. NATO will use blockchain to safeguard financial information, supply, and logistics chains, while the Pentagon is working on a hack-proof data transfer system.

Thomas Lee:

http://www.creia.net/policy/policy/2991.html

BTCC, one of the longest-running and once top-three trading platforms in China, has announced that it's relaunching its exchange business with a plan to issue its own tokens.

The company said on Monday its revamped crypto exchange is now up and running with new trading pairs including bitcoin, bitcoin cash, ethereum and litecoin against the U.S. dollar, as well as crypto-to-crypto trading options.

As part of the plan to revive its business, BTCC said it is introducing a system by which users can be rewarded with points by signing up, completing ID verification and trading. The points, according to the company, can be fully converted into BTCC's own tokens, which will be further tradable on its platform.

However, the company has not revealed a concrete timeline for its token issuance, only saying it will be launched in the next "a couple of months." The firm also indicates that the point supply will have a limit, though it has not yet decided at the moment on a hard cap or a ratio for how the points can be transferred into its token in the future.

Further down the road, BTCC said it is planning to add more major cryptocurrencies and it's also open to listing more ERC-2o based tokens.

BTCC's relaunch plan comes nearly a year after it suspended Chinese yuan trading against bitcoin in September 2017, following the People's Bank of China's clampdown on initial coin offerings and fiat-to-crypto exchanges.

Although the firm shifted its headquarters to Hong Kong and maintained a crypto-to-crypto platform called DAX, that offering was also suspended in December. Meanwhile, BTCC's regional rivals such as Huobi and OKCoin successfully pivoted to crypto-to-crypto platforms and rejoined the ranks of the world's largest exchanges by trading volume.

BTCC's new way of rewarding traders also comes at a time when a new revenue model called "trans-fee mining" has emerged among Chinese crypto exchanges. The system reimburses users' transaction fees with a platform's own tokens – a model that appears to be somewhat similar to what BTCC is planning, except that its tokens can only be redeemed at a later stage.

Commenting on that, the firm's vice president of international business Aaron Choi said that, since BTCC will have zero trading fees in the first three months after relaunch, its model is more of a giveaway rather than mining at the beginning.

However, Choi admits that trans-fee mining could be an option in the future for BTCC, as the firm is yet to decide on the issuance model of its tokens.

He told CoinDesk:

"The (trans-fee mining) model draws a lot of attention at the moment. ... But there's still a business risk so our management is reviewing this model, how it can be sustained in a long term. So giving away points for trading that can be converted into our token in the future is what we think makes sense for now."

Currently, BTCC has diversified its business to three main areas: the exchange, a mining pool and its Mobi wallet. The company was acquired by a Hong Kong-based blockchain capital firm in January of this year.

Just last week, CoinDesk also reported that the firm is planning to sell 49 percent of its equity in the mining pool business to a financial asset management firm based in Hong Kong.

Research, digging into the depth of interests in cryptocurrency investments across 15 countries in Europe has ranked Turkey as the biggest crypto investment nation with about 20 percent of its population in actual possession of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.
Turkish Hodlers
In a recent study conducted between March 26 and April 6, 2018, by a Paris-based statistics firm Ipsos for the Netherlands-based ING Group, results have revealed that Turkey has the most hodlers in the whole of Europe.
Out of the 15 countries surveyed by Ipsos including Turkey, the U.S., Australia, the U.K., Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania and Spain, Turkey had an impressive 18 percent of cryptocurrency investors, dwarfing the entire Europe at  just nine percent. Research results also indicated that at least eight percent of Americans are crypto investors, with Australia having a measly seven percent.
According to the survey, confidence in the future transformation of cryptocurrency into an institutionalized channel of payment as well as the preferred choice for e-transaction was as high as 53 percent in Turkey, with 51 percent of Turks expressing optimism that the price of bitcoin and other cryptos will surge in 12 months time. And another 45 percent saying they will likely invest in virtual currencies soon.
Conversely, the research results revealed that a vast majority of Europeans are cryptocurrency naysayers, with only 35 percent of the population expressing confidence that virtual currencies will moon next year, while 25 percent said they were interested in investing in cryptos.
Awareness deeper in Austria
On the level of cryptocurrency awareness, Austria was ranked the highest with 79 percent of citizens well informed about digital currencies, as against 70 percent in Australia, 66 percent in Europe and  57 percent in the U.S, respectively.
ADVERTISEMENTCoineal2
Notably, a typical stance taken by all in the entire research population was the consensus that cryptocurrencies are much more volatile than conventional investment portfolios such as stocks and bonds. On the sort of influence weighed on investment decisions, about 27 percent of the participants revealed that they are confident in specialist sites’ advice on cryptocurrency investment while 21 percent preferred financial advisors and only 8 percent relied on the input of family or friends.
Islamic Nations Joining the Bitcoin Bandwagon
There have been quite many debates concerning whether cryptocurrencies are ‘halal’ or not, considering the fact that most digital assets including bitcoin are not backed by anything and investing in such volatile portfolios assets is against the Islamic faith. Interestingly though, quite many Muslims have since caught the crypto bug, not minding what their religion stipulates and in April 2018, a highly reputable Indonesia-based microfinance firm published a report stating that cryptocurrencies are Halal and it’s therefore okay for Muslims to hodl.
In February 2018, Turkish authorities started making preparations to launch  their state-backed cryptocurrency named Turkcoin. On May 22, 2018, BTCManager reported that the Shacklewell Lane mosque in the city of London had announced it would accept bitcoin and ether for alms and Zakat, in the recently concluded Ramadan.
Cryptocurrencies open the doors to endless financial possibilities, and it is becoming increasingly hard to ignore. There is indeed no doubt that in the coming years’ bitcoin and other cryptos would have gained massive adoption globally.

How blockchain can fix business pain points

Blockchain is a highly technical concept that has been much hyped, without full understanding of what it can and can’t do

John Heaton, Moneycatcha (Techworld Australia)

Blockchain is a highly technical concept that has been much hyped, without full understanding of what it can and can’t do. The reality is that for certain use cases, blockchain can be a brilliant useful and effective technology. For others it’s not appropriate, and trying to use it for the wrong reasons will just make an existing problem worse.
Blockchain isn’t a replacement for bad systems. This was a point underlined by blockchain engineer Lucas Cullen, who spoke at the recent APAC Blockchain conference in Melbourne. Blockchains are an “append only repository”. They append information to a record, without altering anything existing data there. They are immutable: once a block is written into a blockchain, it cannot be altered. All of the transactions persist, forever.
As such, blockchains augment good systems with tamper proof evidence. They’re a tool to make companies and individuals accountable to their claims, enabling multi-party trust. At the same time they add complexity and time: they have lag by design. They’re not suitable for big data, or when details don’t matter, or when speed is an issue.

Let’s consider what some of the appropriate use cases are. Greg Medcraft, former ASIC chief and now an OECD director, acknowledges that blockchain is a viable commercial platform which the OECD themselves are recommending.  He identifies the following four use cases:
1. Land transfer
In this example, a block of undeveloped land which belongs to the government needs to be tagged and marked with information such as boundary lines. The land is then sub divided and assigned certain property rights: commercial, residential, light commercial etc. The land is then sold and developed.
The provenance of the physical land needs to be recorded as it is being divided/sub divided for commercial and/or residential use and sale. The boundaries of the land are required to be recorded and validated. With blockchain, a permanent, immutable record is created and appended at each transaction point.
2. Passports
Current paper passports are frequently lost, stolen and forged. If you’ve ever had to search back through pages of visa stamps to provide information for a new visa application, you’ll have felt how impractical they are in the digital age.
With blockchain, a “digital passport” could encrypt and store personal information on an individual’s smartphone, which could then be verified alongside biometric information. It would also enhance passengers’ control of their information, with border agencies no longer needing to store it. The United Arab Emirates government is already planning to use blockchain to create digital passports and reduce long passenger queues.
3. Vehicle records

Used cars are typically an area of high fraud and murky information. The joke “one careful lady driver [and 10 maniacs]” wouldn’t be possible with blockchain. Transparency of information about a vehicle’s true history, its wear and tear and servicing, would help resellers gauge value, and give customers confidence in what they were buying.
4. Medical records
Medical errors are the third leading cause of death in the US, and a proportion of these are due to mistakes and omissions in medical records. A study at one Melbourne hospital found that half of patients’ discharge summaries were missing significant clinical information, and one in ten had the wrong diagnosis.
Blockchain could help with both the sharing of data between multiple healthcare entities, as well as improve patient privacy by removing the need for different providers to store it.
As stated, blockchain isn’t a remedy for bad systems. It can’t fix the issue of incorrect data and the need for clean inputs. In the case of land registries, countries with no central registries would need to devise a system for agreeing what data should be entered in the blockchain.

Another issue is that legislation hasn’t caught up yet. While these use cases may be technically possible, is it too early? There are already potential pitfalls around data privacy, or a patient having access to notes intended for doctors’ eyes only, and the legal requirement in some jurisdictions for data to expire (such as criminal records).
Some of these problems may be resolved by using “permissioned blockchain”. Permissioned blockchains are a marriage of concepts, combining centralised user authorisation with a decentralised blockchain transaction ecosystem.
Being able to control the users allowed on a blockchain network reduces the risk of malicious action while increasing control.

Blockchain has its naysayers but there’s no doubt it’s here to stay and we predict businesses and government agencies will in 2018 start to seriously investigate how the technology can improve their processes.

Kenetic

Bitcoin’s polarizing effect has people on both ends of the scale either proclaiming it is going to the moon or it is going to zero. The volatile, unprecedented, and revolutionary monetary system that is cryptocurrency has a future that not many can accurately predict, but as time has gone on, the idea that Bitcoin is going to zero seems more and more far fetched.

A number of commentators, just recently — when Bitcoin has been booming — have come forward with predictions of doom and gloom, warning investors that this new system of money — and investment opportunities — will fall to complete worthlessness.
Bitcoin is barely 10 years old, and has gone from being worth zero to being worth $20,000. So, as we sit with the price lower than many would have hoped, is it feeble to think it can reach as low as zero?
‘It’s going down’
It doesn't matter if it is skeptical friends around a dinner table, or Dr. Doom himself Nouriel Roubini, the prediction that Bitcoin will go to zero often comes up as a counter punch to all the positive strides that cryptocurrencies are making.
Being a new and unprecedented ecosystem, which operates in such established ecosystems as finance and money, it is fascinating to watch how the volatile asset advances. One day it is up, and one day it is down — but what makes people think it will fail all together?
In early February, when Bitcoin was crashing down toward $6,000, the chairman of Roubini Macro Associates, Nouriel Roubini — also known as "Dr Doom" for his pessimistic economic outlooks — made a bold claim:

Nouriel Roubini

@Nouriel
As expected Bitcoin now crashes below $6000. Now the $5K handle is reached.  And the US Congressional Hearing on Crypto-Scams is still a day away.  HODL nuts will hold their melting Bitcoins all the way down to ZERO while scammers and whales dump and run...

Dr Doom had some backup at this low point for Bitcoin as Joe Davis — Vanguard’s global chief economist and the head of its investment strategy group — weighed in. He wrote in a blog post:
“I see a decent probability that its price goes to zero.”
He also chimed in that he is optimistic about blockchain, however. But this separation of blockchain and Bitcoin by investors and institutionalized money movers is flawed, and wrongly brought up over and over again as ‘blockchain over Bitcoin’.
Goldman Sachs has also had their say on cryptocurrencies and the possibility of going to zero, but with the caveat that the bigger — and therefore stronger ones — will evolve and survive. Head of investment research, Steve Strongin said:
“Whether any of today’s cryptocurrencies will survive over the long run seems unlikely to me, although parts of them may evolve and survive. Because of the lack of intrinsic value, the currencies that don’t survive will most likely trade to zero.”
The reasons given by these men for Bitcoin going to zero, — or, in Strongin's case, other cryptocurrencies — range from market manipulation to asset bubbles to lack of intrinsic values. All of these instances and reasons, however, are starting to feel a little outdated.
The fast moving cryptocurrency world has outgrown a number of detractions, most notably the Tulip comparison, which is one of Joe Davis’ favorite comparisons. In recent months, even with the market being so low, there has been a big wave of adoption in the use of blockchain, as well as cryptocurrency.
The blockchain revolution
While Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies are a financial and monetary phenomenon, they are also classed as a technological advancement, thanks to the underlying blockchain technology. This means that there is a whole wave of adoption that can take place across different sectors which can use blockchain and cryptocurrencies.
The adoption that has happened recently has been seen at the top level in a few sectors, namely banks, major corporations and even governments.
There have been big moves by some major global banks to try to get an effective crypto-trading desk that their customers can use, and that they can be party to offering, up and running. Banks are looking to jump on the cryptocurrency bandwagon because demand from customers is so high.
Farzam Ehsani, a former blockchain lead at Rand Merchant Bank and now co-founder and CEO of VALR, told Cointelegraph:
“All banks are realizing they need to get onto this blockchain boat, I don’t think many banks necessarily understand where the boat is going, but they realize that this is a development that is taking off and that, if they want to be on this journey that everyone is going on, they need to be on the boat.”
Furthermore, Companies on the scale of Microsoft, Amazon, IBM and Oracle are also racing to start providing customer-facing blockchain solutions — often tied to cryptocurrencies — in order to be the first to market with an effective and revolutionary product.
Finally, the governments, so often the handbrake of Bitcoin and cryptocurrency adoption, are starting to come around, with the Dutch government being a good example of how this is happening. Just last month, it was reported that the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy had created a unit tasked with researching the further development of blockchain across technology.
So, what does this all mean for Bitcoin and the idea that it can go to zero?
A lot of this hinges on the belief that cryptocurrencies and blockchain can be separated. There is a big push for blockchain adoption — as described above — but the same cannot be said to be as strong for Bitcoin and cryptocurrency adoption.
However, the argument is that the two are definitely linked. Those outside of the blockchain and cryptocurrency space are arguing that the two facets cannot be separated, and thus, if there is an adoption in blockchain, there must be a correlation of benefit to the cryptocurrency space.
With so many faculties as large and dominate as global banks, major corporations and even governments, entering the blockchain space, it would seem hard to see them going on without the cryptocurrency aspect of it.
CEO of Lightning Labs — the developer of the blockchain-scaling Lightning protocol — Elizabeth Stark has spoken out to challenge the Wall Street and traditional financial sector narrative that puts its faith in blockchain, not Bitcoin, in trying to seperate the two so distinctly.
“When we first pitched my company Lightning Labs, we actually took the word ‘Bitcoin’ out of our deck and our marketing material because it was so much about blockchain. Now, I feel like we’ve entered into a ‘Bitcoin, not blockchain’ world, where people understand the value of cryptocurrency technology and what these can bring. You also have proof-of-work in Bitcoin, you have the public/private key cryptography. There are other things that make Bitcoin special. Somehow, the blockchain part got separated and became a thing.”
Adaptable cryptocurrency
Emin Gün Sirer, an associate professor at Cornell University, shared some light on the robustness of cryptocurrencies with Cointelegraph and just how difficult it is for them to completely disappear.
“We have seen that these technologies are quite robust. Chains do not just disappear, they are resilient and stick around. Many of us spent years proselytizing for these technologies in general and Bitcoin in particular. As a result, it had immense goodwill and brand recognition built around it. So there will always be a community around the brand that will ensure that that chain makes progress.”
Gün Sirer’s point — about Bitcoin in particular — is somewhat tied to blockchain technology and where it now stands. The adoption of Bitcoin and blockchain has almost reached a critical mass, where it is difficult for it to suddenly lose total support.
Bitcoin’s brand has exploded recently, and there is evidence both to back up its popularity and just how important that popularity is to its growth and survival.
Btc
Source: Google Trends
There is a correlation between Google search trends for Bitcoin and the price of Bitcoin, which shows that higher interest in and popularity of the coin is intrinsically tied to its price, and thus, in many respects, its success.
This has been noted before in what is called a ‘Satoshi Cycle’
However, Gün Sirer does add:
“They might need to hard fork it to breathe new life into it after a chain death spiral, and it might serve a niche function, its medium of transfer and store of value functionality having been usurped by others. But still, I suspect there will always be a Bitcoin brand and a niche community around it.”

Thailand’s Security and Exchange Commission has released a comprehensive framework for the regulation of the country’s cryptocurrency market. The laws cover ICOs, approved cryptocurrency trading pairs, and licensing fees for market operators. The regulations which were announced on June 8, 2018, come into effect later in the month.

ICO REGULATIONS
In May 2018, Thailand banned ICOs while waiving the previously planned 7 percent VAT on cryptocurrency transactions. The new ICO regulations reverse the ban while stipulating strict conditions that must be met by future ICOs. According to the SEC decree, companies looking to conduct an ICO must signify the type of token being issued as well as other pertinent investment information.

The decree also stipulated that ICO portals must oversee their offerings for at least one year while having a minimum base capital of 5 million baht (about $157,000 USD). The decree also stated:

Each ICO offering can be offered to institutional and ultra-high-net-worth investors at an unlimited investment amount, but the investment is capped at 300,000 baht for retail investment per person and per ICO project, or no more than 70 percent of total value of offered tokens.

APPROVED CRYPTOCURRENCY TRADING PAIRS
Sequel to the May 13, 2018 ruling that virtual currencies be classified as digital assets, the Thai SEC has approved seven cryptocurrencies to used as trading pairs. They are Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum, Ethereum Classic, Ripple, Litecoin, and Stellar.

According to the Thai SEC, these currencies were chosen based on their credibility and liquidity among other parameters.

Ten companies are expected to apply for operating licenses – five of which are exchange platforms and the other five are broker-dealer firms. Cryptocurrency exchange platforms must apply for a license before August 14, 2018.

LICENSING FEES
The new Thai cryptocurrency regulations also contain a comprehensive breakdown of licensing fees for market operators. As mandated by the country’s Finance Ministry, all-digital currency exchange businesses must be registered in Thailand. Also, such companies will pay upfront registration fees of 5 million baht. The fee covers both token distribution and cryptocurrency operations.

The minimum capital for centralized exchange services is 50 million baht ($1.57 million). For decentralized exchanges and brokers, the minimum capital is 5 million baht and 10 million baht ($314,000), respectively. The ministry also stipulated minimum capitals for brokers – 1 million baht ($31,400) and dealers – 5 million baht.

Bitmex

Ben Delo (pictured), who founded BitMex in 2014, has become Britain's youngest self-made billionaire

The UK's youngest bitcoin billionaire has been revealed as a 34-year-old Oxford graduate who lives in Hong Kong.

Ben Delo, who founded BitMex in 2014, has also become Britain's youngest self-made billionaire.

Said to live frugally with his wife Pan Pan Wong, he said he had worked 18-hour days to build his start-up into a thriving trading platform.

Delo and his co-founders have amassed a huge fortune from the enterprise which is worth around $3.6billion, The Sunday Times reports.

He studied maths and computer science at Worcester College, Oxford, graduating in 2005 with a first-class degree.

After working for IBM as a software engineer, he went on to be employed in the City and then moved to Hong Kong to work for JP Morgan.

BitMex was founded along with U.S. colleague Samuel Reed, a computer programmer.

He told the newspaper: 'I have had my nose down in a start-up for the past four years. I was doing 18-hour days at one point.'

He said the company had so little money at the start that he rented out spare bedrooms on Airbnb and carved a small space out of his living room to make another one.

Delo is said to emulate U.S. tycoon Warren Buffett in his frugal lifestyle in Hong Kong.

Delo and his co-founders have amassed a huge fortune from the enterprise which is worth around $3.6billion

The bitcoin billionaire and his wife reportedly use vouchers to buy food at McDonalds and owns only three pairs of shoes.

He also intends to follow the lead of Buffett and Bill Gates to give most of his wealth to philanthropic causes.

Bitcoin saw its value go through the roof last year - beating the 17th Century dutch Tulip Mania, the South Sea bubble and the dot com bubble of the early 2000s to become the biggest economic bubble in history.

But last month Bitcoin prices plummeted by 12 per cent – leaving it at a two-month low – after cryptocurrency exchange Coinrail revealed it had suffered a hack.

Digital coins lost more than $42 billion (£31 million) in value worldwide, sparking fresh concerns about the security of virtual currency exchanges, like Coinrail.
