Hello from Canberra,
A quick update regarding our efforts to make sure that people who have applied for Contributory Parent Visas and are already safe here in Australia, do not have to leave Australia in order for their visa to be granted.
All that has to happen for this change to be made is for the Acting Minister, Alan Tudge, to make sensible changes to his own Migration Regulations. He can do this with a stroke of his pen.
A bit over a week ago the Minister bowed to pressure and said he will eventually change this ridiculous ‘fly out, fly in’ rule for the partners of Australians.
But when asked whether the change would be extended to the parents of Australians, the Minister’s department said that parents were “not immediate family” and that the fly out, fly in rule would continue to apply.
This is honestly baffling. This rule is not only stupid, it is downright dangerous.
Frankly, in the middle of a pandemic, the Government should not be forcing people to take risky and expensive trips overseas. The Government should be preserving precious quarantine places for the 39,000 stranded Australians wanting to come home, rather than wasting them on people who are already here in Australia. It simply does not make any sense.

The only reason that the Minister backed down and agreed to change the partner visa rule was because of the combined pressure through Parliament and the media.
People and families spoke up in the media about their situation. The media pressure shamed the Minister into acting.
