Man died trying to stop robbery
January 29, 2007 By Katherine Dank
A MAN was trying to stop two men from stealing $600 from his friend's Sydney restaurant when he was fatally stabbed.
Mohammed Abdul Kader, a 63 -year-old chef, confronted the men when they threatened a female worker during the robbery at the All Indian Flavour restaurant in Petersham at about 9.30pm (AEDT) yesterday.
Mr Kader, who was not an employee of the restaurant, was the only customer when the robbery took place, police said.
He was stabbed several times when he rushed at the men from his table at the back of the restaurant, owner Mohammed Mondal said today.
As he lay dying on the restaurant floor, the men ripped the cash register - containing between $500 and $600 - from the counter and fled, Mr Mondal said.
Mr Kader was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital but died soon after.
Mr Mondal said he had been working at his second restaurant Moti Mahal in Ramsgate, in Sydney's south, when he was told of the murder last night.
He said Mr Kader worked as a chef at Cumin restaurant, in Crows Nest in Sydney's north, after immigrating to Australia about 12 years ago.
He had no family in Australia and would often visit the All Indian Flavour Restaurant to eat with Mr Mondal and his family.
"He's a very close friend, I've known him for seven years," Mr Mondal said today.
"This is very bad, very bad. This is a shame ... such a lovely country, lovely people, lovely culture.
"He was one of the top Indian chefs in Sydney."
Mr Mondal, who has owned the restaurant only for a few months, said he would increase security.
