楼主不是说,对面的孩子嘛?如果是坐前面看不到就算了。如果在我眼皮底下,对方这样讲话,那我就参与进去 ...
Thanks for your response. You have an interesting point of view. However, my view differs.
I'm still more convinced of my own thoughts even after reading your comments.
Firstly, I am not afraid of people looking down on me. Strangers can do as they please as long as it is not threatening or injurious to others. What others think has nothing to do with my ethnic and cultural identity and the abilities I possess.
Secondly, I grew up in Australia since the age of 5. I am an Australian citizen. Why would I see myself as a foreigner?
I've been educated in Sydney since Year 1 all the way up to post-graduate studies. I've been in this country for 30 years.
In my twenties, I spent 2 years teaching English in China as a foreign language teacher which is why I also have first-hand experience of life in China.
Finally, the stranger was not asking that LZ and his child a question. He was asking his mother a question. That was a conversation between him and his mother. Sure LZ could have interjected and joined in the conversation, however is that really necessary?
As I said, if it was me, I would not have commented because the strangers were not talking to me. The boy was simply curious about why LZ was speaking Chinese with his child. That's fair enough. He is a child and it is only natural for that child to be curious about his social surroundings. It does not mean that they are looking down on LZ or Chinese people. My suggestion is not to over complicate the matter in your own mind. There was no ill intent on behalf of the other passengers on the train. They were not attempting to attack LZ in any way. If my dignity was under attack, then yes, perhaps I would speak up. But in this case, LZ's dignity was not under attack.
My view is not to overthink the situation. We are all human beings. We more or less behave in similar sorts of ways. LZ was not threatened in anyway. LZ was not asked any questions by the strangers. Why should I respond when there is nothing to respond to?
Thanks for your time.
