Killings most likely retaliation: profiler

THE person who bashed to death five people while they slept almost certainly knew them and would have been motivated by an intensely personal need for revenge or retribution, a leading criminal profiler said.
As dozens of detectives and forensic staff enter the fifth day of investigatons in to the murders of the Lin family, a Bond University criminologist said those responsible for such a brutal, targeted crime were almost always known to their victims.
"The sheer number of victims and the brutality of the crime does tend to suggest a retaliatory offence, a revenge offence," Associate Professor Wayne Petherick said.
"And those kind of crimes tend to have these hallmarks; they tend to be very vicious, very personal attacks, and they're always the result of a real or imagined wrong. And retaliatory offences … usually indicate a known suspect."
The murders were also categorised as a "mass homicide", murders involving more than three people, putting them in the highest and most rare category of crimes.
The commander of the Homicide Squad, Detective Superintendent Geoff Beresford, has described the killings as "intensely personal", but has not ruled out multiple killers.
It is understood detectives will spend much of this week examining the family's business and personal background, trying to establish motive.
The apparent lack of forced entry also provided some ability to narrow the field of investigation, he said.
"What kind of security does the house have? Who knew about the security? Were there any spare keys left out?"
Investigators would be concentrating particularly on victimology, the branch of criminal science which establishes and examines the relationship between victim and offender, he said.
"In cases like this the entire case will revolve around … who the victims are, what they are involved in, who they associated with, what they did during the day, what they did at night."
The crime was also a stark reminder that, contrary to popular belief, your home can be a dangerous place rather than a refuge, Mr Petherick said.
"We are most at risk from the people closest to us."
