25年HSC第一：是什么让James Ruse与众不同

刚看了一下JR的官网，Ruse Life 里面挺多内容的，除了没有学校组织的校际体育比赛，GPS和CAS这种，挺surprise的。 活动比很多私校提供的都多，可惜没机会亲自看一看，JR家长不妨分享一下。

My kid has two ATAR 99.95 classmates in primary schooling period.
They both had JR offers and it was no surprise they got this result.
One take the offer and should be the tip of those with ATAR 99.95.
One with private school full scholarship, decline JR offer and should be the top of those with ATAR 99.95.
They are very bright and have a gap in front of my kid.
They show their talent before high school or as early as Year 3.
In this case, it does not matter which school (private or selective) a child studied to get ATAR 99.95.

My speculation is some older female students could not keep their advantages after primary school.
Before selective school test, older student are more mature than younger one and so does female to male student.

hsc同样分数的情况下，应该是的

可惜这么些最顶尖的华人精英争着去做医生，以后医院里看到的医生都是曾经最聪明的精英。难道医生是所有行业里智商情商要求最高的吗？

修啥不如修人，待啥不如待人。医生必须具备工程师、律师、侦探等等的全才技能。很多医生被骂没有道德、没有医德、技术粗糙、误诊漏诊。所以需要在招生的时候尽量招最聪明的精英。

As a parent of 2020 JR graduate and a student from UNSW medicine,
I shall contribute my personal opinions/opposite lessons on OC, selective school tests,
ATAR and medicine admission that many JR students take.
These will be itemised for any feedback.

I give higher weighting on admission to selected University course like medicine than
higher ATAR like 尖子生 with ATAR 99.9+.
To get ATAR 99.9+, my kid needs more resources like tutoring on the HSC/ATAR mandatory subject for a few years.

Regarding undergraduate entry into Medicine, I assign importance factors from high to low:
In performance aspect - UCAT, interview, ATAR
In non-performance aspect - 地利, 人禍, 天时

My kid spent moderate effort on HSC, minor effort on UCAT.
Since HSC and UCAT finished before interviews, my kid could spend more effort on interviews.

My kid was ill equipped in Year 12 as he used mobile phone for internet connection to school lessons and medicine interviews.
Usually, there was a briefing session before medicine interview.
In the first interview briefing session, a medical school (QU) tested our internet connection and
discovered that our internet connection had too high latency.

Why ATAR (99.95) is less important than UCAT, interview?

For ATAR 99.95, my rough estimate
- About 46-48 in NSW
- About 200 in ANZ
- Plus 30-40 IB in ANZ
- Plus unknown number from University GPA conversion
- Plus unknown number from other type of high school exam conversion
- Plus unknown number from bonus adjustment
- ATAR is relevant more than one year and so, plus unknown number from previous years
- Assume half of these compete for undergraduate medicine courses

Say 200 and these ATAR (99.95) cannot be differentiated and so they are all in one single rank.

For UCAT, my rough estimate
- About 14000 candidates
- About 140 in 99 percentile
This top percentile candidates could be ranked individually.

For interview, top interviewees could be ranked individually.

So, one with topmost UCAT or interview result has advantage on one with ATAR 99.95.

However, smaller number of top candidates compete on home state first before
the rest to compete inter-state.

On home state rank competition,
- Assume 30 with ATAR 99.95
- Assume 20 of UCAT with (99 percentile + 100 marks)
So, those with topmost UCAT or interview result still have advantage on those with ATAR 99.95.

JR allocates class based on ranking of Math result in higher years.
My kid only gets tutoring on Math from Year 9 Term 2 to Year 12 Term 1 in order to study with his higher calibre best friend classmates.
To compensate with tutoring cost, my kid did tutoring since Year 9.

When I investigate the medicine courses in NSW, my first question :
The higher ranking the University, the longer the course take.
I asked this question with my consulting Specialist (I am a frequent patient)
and got the same answer as from my partner.
What do you answer?

My kid did his Year 10 work experience on non-medicine area.
At Year 12, he changed his preference to medicine without reason.
I see no or minimal parental influence.
Also, his higher calibre best friend classmates take non-medicine courses based on their interest.

When he took medicine preference, I estimated success chance was over 80%.
My concern was whether it was a home state first preference offer.
Also, there was no track record for UCAT and interview.

So far, my kid have happy schooling and are happy in primary school, happier in high school and happiest in University.
He studied in pre-schools, primary school, high school and University nearest to home.
He came to schools just in time and came to HSC English test a little bit late to minimise COVID exposure.

The disadvantages of happy schooling make him lack of ambition and strong discipline.
He never got individual competition prize.
However, he got some team competition prize with team skill of 濫宇充數.
His preference now is to be a GP.

He is a All-1 rounder with persisting relative weakness on English and
I have no idea of his strongest area.

His English HSC result is not on top band and UCAT VR is on 90 percentile.
However, this has little effect on his ATAR and UCAT score.

At Year 12, 10 HSC units were taken by dropping biology.
He applied many medical schools and got many medical interview invites.
UNSW is his top priority since it's location is most convenient.

It would be easier this year and like last year 2020, interview is done online.
Online interview saves time, money, travel and accommodation.
I guess 拿一个bond offer都不易, 拿到unbond offer就一推。

For medical offers, the dividing line is the UNSW Jan offer round 1.
He had many interviews before the line and 2 interviews after the line.

RUSE很多学生绝不是只靠补习上来的，而是天然的学霸，学习能力强只是这些孩子能力的一部分表现。假设有一天NSW规定取消一切补习，这些孩子还会考入RUSE。

Medicine admission interview is usually arranged in a few dates and multiple circuits.
My kid received an UNSW interview invite on HSC result release date and his interview time was
the first time slot of first interview date.

I guess that Year 2020 UNSW online interviews were allocated from high to low combined ATAR and UCAT score on interview time within interview day or on interview time.

He received UNSW Jan offer round 1 unbonded offer and after that he had interview invites from UWA and Monash.

CSHO

For home state, his top preference is UNSW.
For inter-state, his top preference is Monash and lowest preference is UWA.
He accepted the UNSW offer and declined interview invite from UWA.

Someone wrote on https://medstudentsonline.com.au that usually for Monash interstate interview, up to 75-80% who attend the interview get an offer.
But year 2020 was unusual.
