这写帖子, 真是要一气呵成, 一拖下来就兴趣淡了, 越来越懒, 以前说过要写20年内的人物, 做事要有始有终, 还是来写完.
这联盟党这边, 这二十年来的头面人物依此有:

John Howard, 不用太写了吧, 人人都知道得太多了. Howard做了11年半的总理, 是澳洲历史上在位时间第二长的总理, 仅次于自由党建党人Robert Menzies(前面说过, 自由党建党人Sir Robert Menzies 是在位时间最长的总理, 共做了16年的总理). 而在1985 到1989其间, Howard是反对党领袖, 1987年曾领导反对党参加竞选, 输给Bob Hawke.他的韧性是让人蛮佩服的,也比较善于从自己的错误中学习. 记得我刚到澳洲时,在一家和蔼友善的澳洲人家里homestay, 我的homestay parent, Uncle Benny, 常常说笑说Howard脸上的表情,永远好象是不小心拉了屎在裤子上的窘困模样. 但是不管多么难堪的事情发生, 他也永远就是这付模样而已. 如果我特别喜欢他的话, 也许我可以用这两句中文的诗词来赞美他:

宠辱不惊，看庭前花开花落；去留无意，望天空云卷云舒.

大选大输, 一败涂地, 第二天一早照常在同一时间和太太出来闲闲地慢跑, 这份淡定, 相信很多政治人物就做不到.
1989年, 他从自由党领袖位置下来的时候, 所有人以为他的政治生涯就此结束了, 怎么能想到1995年, 在Alexander Downer痛苦地做了八个月的反对党领袖后 又把自由党领袖的位子交到了Howard的手上.

Alexander Downer应该算是含着银勺出生的,他的爷爷Sir John Downer, 曾两度担任南澳的洲长, 他的父亲Sir Alec Downer, 也曾入阁Robert Menzies的联邦政府, 因为他父亲也是ALEX,  Alexander Downer也常被叫做Baby Alex. 他的前任反对党领袖John Hewson 实在不是一个政客, 那时候基本上已经被民众和自己的政党抛弃了, 只有他自己还蒙在鼓里. 在残酷的政治斗争中, John Hewson可能是一只过于善良的羔羊. 而出生于政治人物家庭的 Alexander Downer从小耳濡目染,对于政治游戏里面的肮脏和两面三刀心知肚明, 对于这场游戏应该怎么玩, 怎么两面三刀, 应该也胸有成竹-比如, 他一面暗地里和Peter Costello 结盟, 一面表明自己继续支持支持John Hewson的领导, 跟John Hewson比Downer更象一个真正的政客, 他能做到这些John Hewson做不到的事情.

当党内领袖变更成为事实, Downer一下得到了大众的热烈追捧, 跟John Hewson相比, 他代表着新的开始, 光明的未来和团结的团队, 那个时候, 他和Peter Costello 算是新血, 而John Howard则被视为已是昨日黄花. 在Downer当反对党领袖其间, Peter Costello是他的deputy. 根据记录, Downer一开始的民众支持率特别高, 老百姓在还不太了解他的时候, 对于他们所看到听到的有关他的一切显然很满意, 他的个人支持率一度打破自由党领袖人物有过的历史记录. 可惜好景不长, 这个蜜月期没有维持很久.

不过还是请坚持，我相信很多同学都在看的，回帖不是特别多，是因为大家对这个话题比较陌生的，插不上嘴

Alexander Downer出身Geelong Grammar School, 又跟随父亲在英国读了多年的书, 他大学是在英国的University of Newcastle on Tyne 读的, 他的学位真不少, Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Politics and Economics, Doctor of Civil Laws (honoris causa) 还有一个Doctor of Philosophy from Bar Ilan University.

全澳洲最昂贵的那所私校的教育和那么多眩目的学位似乎也没有让Downer比较懂得说话得体, 虽然他的英语口音一直被认为是”高雅英语”的代表, 一般认为, 澳洲口音涵盖了从以已故鳄鱼先生Steve Irwin为代表的"broad” 的一端口音到以Alexander Downer为代表的"cultivated" 的另一端的口音, 大多数澳洲人的口音则介于两者之间, 算是"general”.

没过多久, 自由党就看出来这个他们急于选出来替掉John Hewson的人并不比John Hewson更适合当领袖, Downer经常说话离谱, 没分寸, 他的公众形象很快就在几次他说话做事不得体后就严重受损, 最严重的一次是" things that batter" 事件.

事件发生在一次正式晚宴上, 那时候自由党有一套他自己提出的纲领, 叫"The Things That Matter", Downer在严肃的晚宴上说笑说, 自由党的有关家庭暴力政策可以依此被称做" the things that batter", 意指揍LP的丈夫.

Downer也许觉得自己很幽默, 他后来在接受采访时还很委屈地怪责大家怎么都没有幽默感, 可惜媒体和公众并不这么想, 大多数人没有觉得他的笑话好笑.

在他访问西澳和北领地的时候, 他把自己政党在土著产权上的立场又完全搞混了.

几次下来, 民众对他的支持率一路直跌, 在媒体, 政敌和自己党内批评的围攻之下, Downer很快对这个opposition leader 的位置是心灰意冷, 主动让给Howard. 作为回报, Howard让他在自己的内阁里随便挑个部长做, Downer挑了外交部长的位置, 这一做从影子内阁做到政府, 成了澳洲历史上在位时间最长的外交部长, 直到2008年退出政治.

Kevin Rudd 对Downer做外交部长的长命有过一番评论, “Downer is not without ability, but his longevity in the portfolio has depended on one thing, and one thing alone, and that is the political patronage and protection of the Prime Minister". 就是说, 主要是靠对Howard的忠诚和支持才能在这个位置坐得这么长, 不无他的道理. 起码Howard对他很放心, 知道他绝无夺权的能力和野心.

Downer是自由党历史上在位最短的党领袖, 另外, 他, 和Brendan Nelson 和Malcolm Turnbull也是自由党中仅有的三个没有领导过大选的前反对党领袖.

他的外长确实做得很成功, 不过我觉得Steven Smith也还不错.

他的太太Nicky 曾是BBC的记者, 在艺术圈子里颇有名气. 两人育有三个女儿一个儿子, 两人对Downer当PM的野心都不大, 他太太说, 看了她LG在做反对党领袖其间受的罪, 她对政治是兴趣全无了.

I DON'T know about you, but it's always nice to get emails. Once upon a time you'd look with pleasure at a handful of letters which dropped through the letter box. Now all you get are those threatening looking envelopes with windows. Or if you're Tom Koutsantonis, those nasty missives which tell you about passing unknowingly through a speed camera.

But this is a generalisation. At the height of the Schapelle Corby affair I received 5000 emails in one day from fellow Australians pleading with me to save "our Schapelle" from the horrors of the Indonesian legal system. Or, to be a bit more honest, the few I looked at said that.

I'm sure my successor as foreign minister, Stephen Smith, had his in box bursting last week as people demanded he save the beer mat mum, Annice Smoel, from the ravages of the Thai police.

I felt for him especially when the media started demanding he "do something" to save her.

After about 10 minutes as foreign minister I was a little surprised to learn I was "responsible" for miscreant Australians who got into trouble in foreign countries.

No, no, no, don't get it wrong - drug traffickers, drunks, kleptomaniacs and fraudsters weren't responsible for their own stupidity - I was.

It's about time that great nanny in Canberra, the Federal Government, turned around and told people they are responsible for their own decisions.

I was in Lebanon the other day and went down to the southern cities of Sidon and Tyre. They're fascinating places - old Crusader castles, bustling souks, colourful little food stalls with generous owners offering you a taste of their wares.

But I couldn't help remembering the awful events in those same places three years ago when Israel went to war with Hezbollah.

There were said to be 20,000 Australians in Lebanon at that time and a hefty percentage of them were demanding the Australian Government save them and fast.

Lebanese support groups hit the airwaves screaming that the Government was too slow getting those Australians who wanted to be evacuated to safety. But hang on, Australia's about 15,000km from Lebanon and we don't dock ships in the eastern Mediterranean ready to ferry Australians to safety.

And there was something else. We'd issued a travel advisory months earlier warning Australians of the dangers of southern Lebanon and the risks of going there.

It didn't matter - apparently we had to get them out.

We were lucky. The Australian ambassador, a petite, charming professional called Lyndall Sachs, worked day and night chartering ferries and providing comfort to the evacuees, who hadn't cared about the travel advisories, and whisked them to safety.

It was one of the great achievements of an Australian diplomat. Almost single handedly, she managed to get around 5000 Australians to Cyprus and Turkey.

We then chartered planes to take them back to Australia. I hope they built shrines to her. Some did, at least metaphorically.

But some just whinged. They felt seasick on the ferry and that was our fault. Could they get frequent flyer points for the free flight back to Australia? And all this cost around $30 million dollars - your dollars.

I'll tell you this - I didn't get 5000 emails of thanks but I got plenty of abuse because we weren't fast enough, the ferries didn't go from their port of choice and we were slow because we were racist, and so on. I mean, we'd warned them and told them not to go to the south of Lebanon. They went all the same. And when the proverbial hit the fan it was, you guessed it, "our fault".

Then there was Hurricane Katrina, which flooded much of New Orleans. A mother of an Australian who arrived in New Orleans the day the hurricane hit came to see me in Stirling and demanded I get her son out. Americans couldn't get out but I had to get her son out. I asked if he'd heard the warnings from the U.S. Government that week to avoid New Orleans.

She started shouting. He doesn't follow the news, he doesn't watch TV or read the newspapers. I see, I said. It was my fault he was in New Orleans, was it? What were we to do? Fly helicopters from Australia to America and pick up Australians and leave the Americans behind?

I didn't have the guts to say this as foreign minister but don't you think you should take responsibility for yourself when you go overseas?

If you're too dumb or idle to read the travel advisories and too mean to take out travel insurance when you go overseas then you ought to take responsibility for your own behaviour.

Sure, if there's a catastrophe like the Bali bombings or you're trapped in a corruption scam the government should try to help. But not if you're too lazy and silly to help yourself.

Remember two things when you travel. First, there are no special laws for Australians overseas. Foreigners make the laws over there, not us. And secondly, foreigners do things differently and they're entitled to.

If you go to a Muslim country and get wildly drunk and women start dressing down (if you know what I mean) it can be bloody offensive to the locals. You'll soon be in trouble.

And learn to take responsibility for your own behaviour. Stealing is wrong, even stealing beer mats. I know, I know, the beer mat mum had a few drinks but, no, she wasn't drunk and she was charmingly polite to the local police.

But she was in a foreign country with a different culture and all of us ought to respect that.

Steven Smith第一太面，没个性；第二对亚洲文化和影响的理解肤浅，第三，Kevin Rudd跟Whitlam有些像，就是非常注重外交，并且亲历亲为，到了overshadow the foreign ministry的地步。这一点虽然不是Steven的错，但我总觉的首先是他自己有前面两点的缺点，才会导致总理能够基本上接管外交部的结果

这个我实在觉得不是Steven Smith的错, Kevin Rudd的风格就是亲历亲为, 或者说不好听点就是micromanagement, 不单单是对于外交部长如此而已. 他跟着Steven Smith一起出访是感觉有点怪怪的.记得有看过说有工业界的人突然既惊讶又高兴同时又觉得有点好笑地接到PM的电话要求"catch up", 这在往常都是部长或部长手下人的事. "He's clearly not leaving this up to ministers."
在这样的boss 手下, 不争风头又办事有效, 我觉得他做得蛮好了.

Smith stays calm amid the storm

There is a tale around Parliament - an entirely plausible one - concerning the moment a newly elected Kevin Rudd rang Stephen Smith and asked him to be the foreign minister.

Having a young family and being from Perth, Smith was already conscious of the travel demands of domestic politics and the impact on family life. Having the foreign affairs portfolio would amplify that impact significantly. If he wasn't in Canberra he would frequently be abroad.

Smith asked Rudd if he could have some time to think and talk it over with his wife. ''Sure,'' Rudd said. ''I'll ring you back in 20 minutes.''

In almost two years since, Smith has been one of the success stories of the Rudd Government; quietly, efficiently and apolitically prosecuting an enormous agenda for his foreign policy wonk boss. In recent weeks Smith has started to prove his worth on a domestic front as well, helping Rudd and the Government out of tight spots.

Smith can sometimes be more effective than his boss, who, when not in control of events, struggles for a while to find his line and length. In August Smith put Malcolm Turnbull and the Opposition spokeswoman on foreign affairs, Julie Bishop, in their place after she bagged the Government for having the temerity to upset Beijing by issuing a visa to the Uighur separatist Rebiya Kadeer.

Smith reminded Turnbull of his own words two months earlier when he spoke strongly against allowing China's state-owned Chinalco to lift its stake in Rio Tinto. ''I vaguely remember the Leader of the Opposition saying to the Government some time ago that we should stand up to China. We did on the Rebiya Kadeer issue.''

Turnbull had spoken on May 1 about how the Chinese respected those who stood up for themselves. ''If we wish to express our approach in Chinese, then we could paraphrase Mao Zedong and say: Aodalia renmin zhan qilai le - the Australian people have stood up.''

Last week Smith hit his straps as the debate over asylum seekers started showing signs of a return to 2001.

On Monday the Opposition started probing in Parliament, demanding that the Attorney-General, Robert McClelland, guarantee that none of the 78 asylum seekers aboard the Customs vessel the Oceanic Viking would ever set foot on Australian soil.

A left source said later that as question time rolled on the backbench was starting to stir. Unrest had been growing about where the so-called debate was headed, and Rudd and others were struggling to find the right balance between tough and compassionate.

''Smithy saved the day,'' he said. ''He calmed everybody down.''

He was referring to Smith taking a Dorothy Dixer at the end of question time. In his answer, he exploded, demanding to know what policies the Opposition wanted to reintroduce.

''If you stand there and say the sum total of your argument is to identify and look at changes the Government has made in processing people who come to to this country, just tell us which ones you would introduce?

''Putting the kids back behind barbed wire? Introducing temporary protection visas? Or seeking to somehow discharge our humanitarian and legal obligations by processing people on Manus Island and Nauru?''

The source said this contribution headed off a probable bout of unrest at Tuesday's caucus meeting.

It is not entirely accurate to contend the debate is back where it was in 2001. This was best exemplified on Thursday, when Wilson Tuckey said there were good odds of terrorists being among the asylum seekers.

Rudd rather ambitiously demanded that Turnbull force Tuckey's resignation. Turnbull, with some justification, accused Rudd of confected outrage but nonetheless distanced himself from Tuckey's comments.

By contrast, terrorists among the boat people was the official line in 2001 as the then government successfully morphed September 11 and asylum seekers into one. Peter Reith pushed hardest, ably supported by the backbencher Peter Slipper, who said: ''There is an undeniable linkage between illegals and terrorists.''

John Howard gave the line credence in the final week of the election campaign six weeks later.

As this fight rolls on, its political potency should not be underestimated, but so far it lacks the backbone of eight years ago.

Aside from Smith, the Immigration Minister, Chris Evans, has been winning plaudits from colleagues for his defiance and refusal to panic.

One of the highlights of the debate has been the yelling match between Evans and the Liberal inquisitor Concetta Fierravanti-Wells in a Senate estimates hearing last week. After the shooting stopped and the news had gone to air, Evans gave her a chocolate to assure her there were no hard feelings. She was chuffed.

1993 年的大选, Downer 的前任联盟党的John Hewson是输了一场被称为不可能输的大选, 而他的对手工党的Keating 则是赢了一场本不可能赢的大选, 意外之喜, 连任了PM.

当时, 工党已经执政10年之久, 而澳洲正初于六十年来最严重的经济衰退中, 上百万的澳洲人失去了工作, 无论工党如何努力, 经济仍然是积弱难返,恢复得非常缓慢.

作为反对党领袖的John Hewson,有着令人瞩目的学位和工作经历. 他是个经济学家,有Johns Hopkins University的经济博士学位, 还有两个硕士学位. 在Phillip Lynch 和John Howard做财政部长其间, 他曾做过他们的智囊. 他还做过Reserve Bank of Australia的经济学家, 以及Macquarie Bank.的总裁.

Keating的嘴巴是多么的厉害, John Hewson怎能是他的对手呢, 在1991年12月, Keating 在工党内部成功挑战Bob Hawke 成为PM后, (这段历史以后谈到他们再详述), Keating就不断攻击GST 和John Hewson.

Keating 给John Hewson起了很多的外号, 比如"Visiting Professor”, “Feral Abacus”, 竭力把他渲染成只会在书本里搞学问, 不懂民间疾苦的迂腐先生, 而John Hewson自己, 在大选前一次媒体的采访中, 在主持人问他一个简单的问题, “在GST后, 如果我去买一个生日蛋糕, 是要多出钱了还是便宜了? " 他的回答不但把主持人绕得胡里胡涂, 把看节目的观众们也都绕糊涂了, 显然, 在当时的经济气候下, 这新政很难得到民众的支持.这个采访, 因此成为澳洲历史上有名的”Birthday cake interview”.

Hewson的对手Keating对他其实还是蛮同情的, Hewson曾经回忆说, 大选过后第一次回到国会, Keating把他叫到一根柱子后面, 说有话跟他说, 然后Keating问Hewson感觉怎么样? 输了大选感觉一定很糟糕,然后向Hewson道歉说, 过去几年他骂了Hewson很多, 说了他很多很难听的话, 但是他想告诉他其实这都是为了竞选,为了竞选他是不择手段的, 其实他还是很尊敬很仰慕Hewson的.希望他不要放在心上. Hewson对Keating说:"Thanks for that, it does mean a lot to me."

Hewson和Keating一样出身贫穷, 而当时的他们, 经过多年奋斗, 都已经都过上了富人的生活,当时的Hewson住在double bay, 而Keating住在Elizabeth Bay, 只有掷石之距, Hewson开着法拉力, Keating好歹也开了辆奔驰.可是, 当Keating用那些竞选的招式来把Hewson渲染成象牙塔中人的时候, 老百姓们好象都忘记了这些.

你的多年老对手, 在一定程度上是不是也算是你的朋友? 你可能了解他甚至超过了你的朋友. 有时候不同政党的人看到自己的对手在他们各自党里被残酷玩弄抛弃的时候, 也许也是会有同情心的吧, 就象John Howard 看到Kim Beazley 被Kevin Rudd搞下来的时候, 也不禁心有戚戚. 有一次Keating在国会大厦外面看到Hewson孤零零地站在那里, 看上去心情十分低落, 一件不太寻常的事情发生了, 据报道说, Keating不禁走上前去, 把双臂环绕着这个反对党领袖的肩膀.至于他说了些什么, 没有人知道.

Keating是个性情中人, 能做出这样的事我毫不奇怪. 这也许正是他的魅力之一, 绝对是一个很有趣的人.

确实写连载需要持续的热情和勇气的

不过还是请坚持，我相信很多同学都在看的，回帖不是特别多，是因为大家对这个话题比较陌生的，插不上嘴

要最了解一个男人的性格缺陷, 最佳从何处着手? 大概是他心怀不忿的前妻吧. 我比较相信"一屋不扫, 何以扫天下”的理论, 一个男人如果连自己的LP都不能给安抚好, 让她们上电视啊出书啊来出他的洋相, 大概做为领袖人物, 还是有性格不够完美的地方.

好象比较出名的上电视控诉过的大奶们有: Mark Latham 的前妻Gabrielle Gwyther和John Hewson 的前妻Margaret Deaves. 其他的政治人物, 就算有过别的婚姻关系, 他们的配偶都蛮配合的. Kim Beazley 的前妻Mary Ciccarelli, 曾做为他的朋友和支持者上过电视. Andrew Peacock有过两任前妻, 都是名人, 一个是律师Susan Renouf, 一个是播音员Margaret Fletcher, 都从没有在公共场合给过他难堪.

其实John Hewson 的前妻的控诉也还好, 绝对不是象Mark Latham 的前妻那样火爆的, 主要无非是哀怨丈夫离开她和三个孩子, 也要澄清一下三个孩子是她生的, 不是他后来的太太Caroline生的.

他后来的那个太太Carolin Somerville ,在投资银行业非常成功的职业女性, 当时是被描述为"looked like John, spoke John's language and, best of all, could work a room almost better than him" 的 "upper middle-class blonde", 在两人生活多年, 有了一个女儿后, 居然也不能忍受, 下堂求去, 成了他的第二任前妻.

我觉得那次Hewson输给Keating主要是不会包装GST 和电视辩论失去了民心. 而Keating 在bankstown 长大的背景也成为他了解和可以代表澳洲打工族的一张皇牌. Hewson 太不’政客‘了
