The glucose tolerance test (GTT) is performed after a 10-12 hour fast. The fasting plasma glucose is measured, and then 75 g glucose solution is drunk in not more than 5 minutes, and the 2-hour plasma glucose measured. Patients may not smoke, eat nor drink anything other than water during the test, and should not perform any exercise. Gestational diabetes (GDM) is defined by either a fasting plasma glucose value ≥ 5.5 mmol/L and/or a 2-hour value ≥ 7.8 mmol/L. |
