Parramatta12岁男孩步行20公里求学Sydney Grammar

好吧，我承认标题党了。但这是一个真实的故事，发生在近两百年前。

1832年，Parramatta还没有高中，12岁的James Martin为了求学悉尼最好的中学，又不愿让作马夫的父亲为难，步行20公里从Parramatta走到Sydney Grammar。父母担心路上有劫匪，但是他说“劫匪抢代数几何书干什么用呢？”


30年后，这个12岁的男孩，担任了新州总检察长，后来连任三届新州州长，从州长退休后，又担任了新州首席大法官。

1892年，在他去世后6年，以他命名的Martin Place正式开放。

2020年11月，为了纪念他的这段求学经历，一个等高的真人铜像在Martin Place揭幕。


今天无意中路过，感慨一下悉尼人民还是有注重教育的优良传统的。在Martin Place商业气息这么浓的地方，有这样一个艰苦求学的故事，也算是铜臭中的一股清流吧！




再感慨一下，这其实是一个1岁跟随父母来到悉尼的爱尔兰移民的澳洲梦的案例。徒步上学只是管中窥豹，可见一斑。

Martin went on to become a journalist, editor, Attorney-General of NSW, Chief Justice of NSW and Premier of NSW three times- the only person to have ever held all three positions.

The son of a horse groom from Parramatta, the young James Martin famously did whatever it took to get an education at what would later become Sydney Grammar, including even walking and hitching the 20km from home to school because his family couldn’t afford to live nearby.

应该没有那么夸张，也有搭便车(应该是马车），晚上可能住在学校。

应该是单程二十公里，然后隔一晚在学校睡一夜.这样每天其实总共也就二十公里.

话说前两年微信运动，咱每天两万多步 好像也是二十公里

感觉Martin place商业气息那么重的地方，有这么一个艰苦求学的铜像，也算是铜臭中的一股清流吧！

好奇那个时候报考SG是否需要推荐信？他住parramatta,离Kings岂不更近，难道那个时候SG学术的名声就高于Kings?

Sydney grammar的前身是Sydney college，1830年成立。 Kings两年后才成立，估计Martin他爹还是觉得城里的学校更好些，对新开的Kings不太放心。

In 1830, Sydney College was founded. Sir Francis Forbes, Chief Justice, became President of the College and laid the foundation stone of the present building in College Street on the 26 January 1830.

While the opening of The King's School on 13 February 1832 started somewhat inauspiciously with just three young boys in attendance, numbers quickly grew and by the end of the year, with numbers approaching a hundred, accommodation at the rented premises - now known as Harrisford in George Street Parramatta, was already stretched.

Parramatta也是历史悠久啊！

Parramatta was founded in 1788, the same year as Sydney. As such, Parramatta is the second oldest city in Australia, being only 10 months younger than Sydney.

The Darug people who lived in the area before European settlement regarded the area as rich in food from the river and forests. They called the area Baramada or Burramatta ('Parramatta') which means "head of waters", "the place where the eels lie down" or "eel waters". To this day many eels and other sea creatures are attracted to nutrients that are concentrated where the saltwater of Port Jackson meets the freshwater of the Parramatta River.

我们初中也有差不多的一个同学。到初二的时候，运动会所有径赛冠军拿了个遍，纪录多年无人打破。

Parramatta也有同样的一个铜像，之前在Smith street，后来应该搬到Parramatta CBD去了。改天去参观一下。

没办法，要上学，不过我觉得那时很开心啊，没觉得累。从小一直到高中没去过医院，

貌似一直都是悉尼最好，直到90年代才被JR取代。

我冠军不敢说，奖牌无数，哈哈。踢足球我能踢一天不累。然后上班以后身体就不行了，一天比一天差。
