Let me tell you my experience.
I also use Chromecast. To "cast" your videos you have to use Chrome as a browser for your videos. However, by default Chrome does not support avi; therefore, I have to convert my collections into mp4 or m4v formats. Although I have heard that I can use chromecast to cast my screen as an extended monitor, I have not been successful in configuring this as this is still under alpha testing.
I also install "Plex" to manage the movies.
I have a "N" network with a few hotspots installed. Using Chromecast to broadcast self recorded videos or photos from mobile phones (apple or samsung) directly is very smooth.
