Just wondering, what would be a good second instrument to learn. My daughter is 5yo and has been playing the piano for a year. Only if she's willing, i thought it would be nice for her to learn a second instrument. I know she's too young now but i am just curious what you think will be a good instrument and at what age shall i consider introducing it.

Thanks for your comments. I agree 5yo is too young for 2 instruments. I'd rather her take up a sport activity. I guess i am just mentally planning ahead!

My daughter's piano teacher does not pro exams. She thinks it is only necessary if she wants to go for a music scholarship, and i agree with her too. So hopefully she won't need to stress over exams and performance too often in the next few years. I may consider letting her try for an exam a few years later, just to get some idea what level she is at.

I like violin too. The school she goes to can offer lessons when she is in year 3. Do you think that's a good time to start violin?

Anyway, i will see how it goes. I think because i have always wanted to learn 2 instruments (i can play only the piano) so i may be a bit over-keen!

I started playing the piano at 4 yo too so i took her to two diff piano teachers near home - one australian and one russian for a trial lesson when she was 4. Both said she was ready so i felt comfortable for her start lessons that young. I am very happy with the piano teacher i chose (the Russian). She is very good and verh gentle with children, take it very slowly, not pro exams, and always give me lots of feedback. My daughter absolutely loves her and i think that's why she is able to persist.

I only have a boy 4 years old and going to Yamaha, he enjoys it and I am not pushing him to do anything else yet, I am piano teacher and I have seen lots unhappy kids doing what parents want them to do and I promise to not do that to my own kid. Have a chat with your girl, think she is the one should be telling you what she likes or she might likes, kids need parents to help them pick what they likes but not tell them what  they should like.

If financially allowed, let her try what she wants, there is no harm to try because until you try you don't know how hard is going to be but if that's the one she said she likes, she will try extra hard before give up, trying is the best way to learn and to figure out like or dislike, without trying you would never find out, maybe one day she would be great?!

My daughter is already having swimming and dance lessons once a week. Moreover, the childcare centre she attends let the kids spend several hours outdoors each day. She is often sweaty from running around with her friends in the garden everytime i picked her up from the centre. I am not making her learn a musical instrument in the expense of doing sports.

In addition, didn't i write in my original post that for her current age, i prefer her to do more sports? Maybe you should read more carefully next time.

The kindy she attends next year request all kids to learn recorder and then a musical instrument, usually strings, when they are in year 3. I was just curious what other people's experience and thoughts are on learning 2 instruments. Please don't judge.

Lastly, being someone who has learned piano from 4 years old, and who actually enjoys music (rather than just aiming to get high marks in exam), i have always wished i could play another instrument which is more mobile and that allows me to play more spontaneously. Hence, i am not against learning 2 instruments.

My 8'year old has been learning piano since 5.  She recently got A for her grade 2 exam,  Her piano teacher has been pushing me for her to pick up a second instrument, (for music scholarship she told me very clearly not for other reasons). but I have decided not to, simply I don' t have that much time and energy to keep with the two, plus we both work.

If you have the time, energy and money and your child likes it, it is worth a try.
