GORDON residents whose cats have been badly injured or killed by “a maniac with an air rifle” are warning pet owners to be vigilant.

Four cats from Elgin, Darnley and Rothery streets have been shot and two of them were killed.

Police suspected that the animals were shot by someone who lives in the neighbourhood.

Mr Brown, a 12-year-old tonkinese, was shot recently and died after five hours of surgery.

His owner, who did not wish to be identified, said the pellet tore through his bowel.

“The great sadness is the cat was so friendly - when we went around the neighbourhood to tell people, they were devastated,” she said.

“The person who shot him obviously thought he was vermin but if they only knew how much he brought the community together.”

Two months ago, Elgin St resident Michael McGee was horrified to discover his burmese cat Coco had been shot.

Two-hour surgery cost about $1000 and fortunately the pet survived.

Gordon vet Scott Lachenby, who operated on both animals and retrieved the pellets for evidence, said the cat that died had severe internal injuries.

The other was lucky to have sustained more superficial injuries.

A third resident said her cat was shot and killed five years ago, noting it was “quite naughty and came home one day with sausages”.

“We think the cats have probably all gone into someone’s yard,” she said.

“Our neighbour’s cat was shot too, and lost half an ear.”

The residents are planning a letterbox drop warning people to keep their eyes and ears open to suspicious behaviour.

Police are continuing their investigation.
