THINK TWICE BEFORE WASHING PAINT DOWN YOUR DRAIN
15 Dec 2009
EPA Victoria is reminding painters and home renovators to think before they
rinse after fining a Dandenong paint contractor for washing paint residue from
his equipment down a stormwater drain in May this year.
EPA’s director of environmental services Bruce Dawson said many people were
unaware of the environmental consequences of doing this but a $1361 fine was
likely to make them think twice.
“In this instance, the paint wash ended up in Scotchman’s Creek, clouding the
water, and creating an unsightly mess,” he said.
EPA, with the assistance of Melbourne Water, undertook an investigation of the
drainage system, including a drain walk, which identified the building site
where the paint came from.
The building company who had employed the contractor at its construction site
was also issued with an official EPA warning for not enforcing best practice
standards on site.
Mr Dawson said unfortunately an ‘out of sight-out of mind’ mentality tended to
prevail when it came to stormwater protection.
“Stormwater drains run into creeks, rivers and the sea, linking them to a
number of delicate ecosystems,” he said.
“With the warmer months upon us, people are more inclined to get busy around
the house. It is important painters don’t wash brushes and rollers in drains or
gutters.
“EPA recommends people do their homework first and research via their local
council or EPA on how to dispose of paint properly.”
