10 December
Dear MLC School families
Last night we celebrated the Senior School speech night and honoured the teachers,
students and parents who contribute on a daily basis to make MLC School a leading
school. It is always such a highlight of my year to share in our girls' celebration of
achievement and experience the potential of our student body.
Following such a wonderful evening, it was, of course, disappointing to wake up to the article
on MLC in the media this morning. As is so often the case, there is a fair degree of
journalistic licence in what was said. I do not believe it is helpful to address all the points in
the article, however, I do want to say the following.
MLC School has enjoyed another excellent year and we anticipate strong results in the HSC
and IB over the next few weeks. It is important to honour these successes and acknowledge
the hard work from teachers and students to make them possible.
It is absolutely true that a number of our much-loved staff will be leaving at the end of this
year and that we will miss them greatly. The recent turnover has certainly been higher than
the Principal and the Council would have liked, and we see it as an important priority that it
quickly returns to more normal levels. That said, please do not forget that there are many
more equally inspiring teachers staying with us, and joining us, for 2016 and it is not
reasonable to portray them any other way.
The School Council in its governance role, is aware of the positive and negative emotions
running through the community around staff turnover and some management
decisions. Please rest assured that this message has been heard and the school is actively
working on stability for 2016 and beyond. It is core to the spirit of MLC to be passionate
about the school and to encourage freedom of speech, challenge and debate. In this spirit, I
would encourage all who engage in these conversations to do so constructively and with the
dignity and respect that are core to the MLC ethos that values and celebrates diversity.
Despite the image being portrayed in the media, this is not a school in turmoil. Yes, there
are differences of opinions and a number of changes currently being worked through. And
through this, the school continues to deliver outstanding educational experiences for our
students, enabling them to realise all they are capable of academically, on the sporting field
and in the arts. This will continue throughout 2016 and beyond as it has for the last 130
years.
Yours sincerely
Pauline Johnston
