Heart murmurs in cats

What is a heart murmur?
A heart murmur may be heard by your vet when he or she listens to your cat's heart. A heart murmur is caused by turbulent blood flow within the heart or the large vessels exiting from the heart. This results in an abnormal noise which can be heard by your vet when listening with a stethoscope.

How are heart murmurs assessed?
Heart murmurs are assessed and graded according to certain criteria. Grades I-VI are recognised, with Grade I being the most mild, and Grade VI the most severe. The grading system is based largely on how loud the murmur is, but other factors are also considered, such as the area over which the murmur is audible.

The grade of the heart murmur does not necessarily relate to the degree severity of the underlying heart problem. Some severe heart conditions may not associated with any heart murmur at all, and some quite loud murmurs may occur with relatively small defects.

Causes of heart murmurs
Although the presence of a murmur usually implies an underlying heart condition, murmurs can sometimes have other causes.

In young kittens, so-called 'innocent' heart murmurs may be heard as an incidental finding. These are usually no longer present when the kitten is older. Anaemia is another cause of heart murmurs in cats, but the cats often show other signs of lethargy and anorexia as well. Occasionally cats are reported to have incidental murmurs as adults, and this is called a 'physiological murmur' - e.g., the blood flow within the large vessels exiting the heart may occasionally be heard as a murmur, but this is usually of no clinical significance and does not result in clinical disease.

What to do when a heart murmur is detected
When a heart murmur is first detected in a cat, any other clinical signs that would suggest an underlying problem (e.g., lethargy, abnormal breathing pattern or effort, pale gums) are assessed and investigations will be performed to establish the underlying problem. This may involve further examinations such as an X-ray of the heart or a cardiac ultrasound examination (echocardiography).

If however the cat is very well, is showing no other clinical signs of a problem, and exercises normally, then your vet may suggest a repeat examination in a few months to reassess the heart murmur and see if it has changed, or if the cat has developed any other clinical signs. Often if the cat is well and the heart murmur is unchanged, periodic examination will be recommended.

The only way to determine if there is any disease within the heart itself that may be causing the murmur is to perform a detailed ultrasound examination of the heart. This is completely painless and is normally performed in a fully conscious cat. Your vet may suggest that you take your cat to a specialist vet for this to be done. Other tests sometimes recommended may include an ECG (an electrical tracing of the heart) and perhaps some blood tests to look for any potential underlying causes of heart disease.

In addition to heart murmurs, another abnormality that may occasionally be heard is a 'gallop' sound (an extra heart sound), which usually suggests that there is significant heart disease present, and further investigations will usually be warranted.

When I swapped vets two months ago, the vet spotted that my cat had a slight heart murmer.

He explained that all that it means is that his heart is beating slightly out of rhythem. Heart murmers are graded on a scale of 1 to 8. As my cats heart murmer is a 1, it won't affect him at all. He doesn't require any medicine, and will be fine under anesthetic.

The vet DID mention that heart murmers can become more severe as the cat ages, but this can be treated with medication and will not be a threat to his health so long as he is checked regularly by the vet.

So, if your cat is anythign like mine - I guess the answer is nothing - it's fine! If it's more severe, your cat may need more vet attention, but it shouldn't affect his health too badly.

your cat will faint...then die...but then return to life....then eat your brains...

Don't come here for a question like this or you'll get answers like the moron who said your cat is going to die and there's nothing you can do about it. Learn to ask your vet while you're there and to not be afraid to call back if you forget something or have more concerns. In this case it may be that the vet doesn't know in which case you have to either have invasive tests done or just give kitty a good life and not count his days.

A murmur can be serious or not. My dd and I were both born with them as was one of my cats. My cat lived to a ripe old age and I'm over 50. None of us had any treatment. All three of us have given some doctors concerns but not others. In my case when a doctor asks if I know I have one I say yes, I've always had it, and they shrug and say "oh, okay."

My 8 year old Persian kitty has a heart murmur. The vet just checks it when she gets her annual check up and shots. She is great with no complications.

Depends on what kind of murmur and how severe. Most typical heart murmurs don't really cause problems but sometimes when they're more severe they do, talk to your vet about it. I myself actually have a heart murmur that rarely causes me problems, and when it does it's only shortness of breath or slight chest pains.

My kitten has a murmur. The only time the vet expressed any sort of concern was when she was getting spayed because occasionally murmurs can cause a problem during anesthesia. Some cats grow out of them completely. Your vet will let you know if it's anything to worry about and they'll tell you the appropriate course of treatment, if any.

Hi My cat Charlie has a very bad heart murmur, he has had it for 2 years now he is on medication every day. He is 11 and thinks he is still a kitten. Don't worry the vet will keep a check on your cat. If for any reason he loses the use in his back legs and starts panting really bad, Take him very quickly to the vet's this is what happened to Charlie and how we knew about his heart.

my cat Jimmy is 3 and has had a heart murmur all his life, he always looks totally amazed when the vet mentions it at his check ups. he has never let it stop him leading a full and active life, we have five cats in all and he is leader of the pack. don't worry until the vet tells you there is something to worry about!! :-)

your cat is going to die and there is nothing you can do to stop it.
