Engineering head elected academy fellow
Professor Mike Xie has been elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE).
He is Discipline Head of Civil Engineering in the School of Civil, Environmental and Chemical Engineering at RMIT University.
Professor Xie will be installed along with 30 other new fellows of the academy at ATSE’s 2011 annual meeting on 26 November.
ATSE, founded in 1976, is an independent body of about 800 eminent Australian engineers and scientists driving technological solutions for a better Australia and to recognise and promote the achievements of Australian scientists, engineers and technologists.
Professor Xie was elected in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the advancement of knowledge and successful applications of structural optimisation techniques.
The techniques proposed by Professor Xie, and the associated computer software developed by his research team, have been used by engineering firms and research institutions for design innovations around the world.
Professor Xie has been awarded 12 major research grants by the Australian Research Council, including six Discovery grants.
He has been retained as a consultant to a wide range of engineering and architectural firms including Boeing, Bovis Lend Lease, BKK Architects and Sinclair Knight Merz.
Over the past 12 months he has been invited to deliver three keynote lectures at international conferences in Japan, China and Australia.
Professor Xie has published a series of highly influential papers on topological optimisation.
His ground-breaking article, "A simple evolutionary procedure for structural optimisation", appeared in the journal of Computers and Structures and became one of the most widely cited papers in the field of structural optimisation with more than 330 citations by Science Citation Index (SCI) journals.
His book on evolutionary structural optimisation, published by Springer-Verlag, has attracted more than 400 citations on Google Scholar.
Professor Xie said he was honoured and delighted to be awarded the prestigious ATSE fellowship.
RMIT Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Margaret Gardner AO, congratulated Professor Xie on the distinction.
"This is very well deserved and a great recognition of your contributions," she said. |
