A COSMETICS sale turned ugly yesterday and police had to tame a stampede of aggressive shoppers.
Organisers of the L'Oreal Friends and Family event were forced to shut down the warehouse sale in Collingwood after up to 300 women turned it into a battleground.
Witnesses said six police cars responded as a huge queue jostled to get inside.
Shopper Jenny Iatrou, 43, said it was lucky no one was seriously hurt, including children accompanying their mums.
"I've never seen anything like this," she said. "People were getting aggressive, men too. It got to the point that even customers inside couldn't get out.
"The entrance was inundated with so many people all swarming in, that they barricaded the outer door shut, so people couldn't get in or out, which must have been pretty alarming.
"It's lucky no one was seriously hurt."
She waited for nearly three hours outside the Wellington St premises, only to be told the event was being shut down.
Rose Zong, 30, who also waited for hours, said people were frustrated that security failed to rein in the chaos.
"The queue was so long it extended into the nearby underground carpark all the way to level two," she said.
"There was no roped-off area, and people were trying to push in from different directions, but security basically said, if you're not happy with the situation, you can go home.
"Also, they were supposed to open at 10am, but didn't open until 11.15am, and we started hearing rumours that .... when the organisers saw how large a crowd had turned up, they started up-pricing products.
"So obviously when people started hearing that, they got even more annoyed."
Police denied reports of women throwing punches and said there were no injuries or assault charges laid.
A spokeswoman said L'Oreal had received complaints and the big crowd was due to promotion online.
"We had a lot of interest yesterday, but the first day always generates the most hype," she said. "We do not expect to see such large numbers today."
The event was reopened late afternoon after the crowds had eased.
