I use Nikon and got the SIGMA 70-300 APO (MACRO). There are two models, APO or non-APO, APO is lot better.

German photo magazine "Fotohits 04/2009" tested and compared:
Sigma 70-300 F4-5.6 DG APO Macro
Tamron 70-300 F4-5.6 Di LD Macro
Measurements:
- Resolution 300mm f/5.6 [Lp/PH] Sigma/Tamron: 2156 / 1785
- Resolution 100mm f/8.0 [Lp/PH] Sigma/Tamron: 2905 / 2937
SIGMA APO is better than Tamron LD
BUT this lens
1) Nikon is 1/3 sharper than Sigma APO, but double price
2) The lens sharpness drop by far between 200-300mm. 70mm is GREAT.
3) Macro is not close enough, and not sharp enough, amateur level ! only support 200-300mm !
4) You will need f8-f10 to get sharpness from 300mm !
5) not sure Tamron, Sigma is "made in japan".
6) Tamaron design is identical to Nikon model, but not picture quality ...
Good to play around lens, cheap and good value, amateur level.
