Teachers united in league table boycott
TEACHERS have voted unanimously to boycott national literacy and numeracy tests in May, in a protest against the creation of school league tables.
In response to the vote, the Federal Government confirmed it would press ahead with plans to publish comparisons of similar schools based on results of the tests on its My School website from Thursday next week.
Australian Education Union delegates voted in favour of boycotting the NAPLAN tests scheduled for May 11, 12 and 13 for students in years 3, 5, 7 and 9.
After the vote was taken at the union's annual federal conference in Melbourne, the president, Angelo Gavrielatos, wrote to the federal Education Minister, Julia Gillard, warning her that teachers would not implement the tests if the Government failed to take steps by April 12 to prevent the creation and publication of school league tables.
In his letter, Mr Gavrielatos said teachers viewed school league tables ''as one of the greatest threats to the provision of quality education in the history of Australia''.
''We are, however, convinced that any action in May can be avoided if you are prepared to look at ways to prevent the data published on the My School website being used to create and publish league tables,'' he said.
A spokeswoman for Ms Gillard said the minister had ruled out curbing media coverage of school comparisons made on the website. ''The Government has no intention of restricting media coverage or imposing fines as the Liberal Party has done in NSW. These measures will better inform the education debate in this country,'' she said.
Earlier in the day, Ms Gillard said: ''Parents are hungry for information about how their child is going at school and national testing gives parents information about how their child is performing compared with children right around the nation.
''I would say to the Australian Education Union the worst thing in the world is for a child to be in an underperforming school, not getting a good education and for no one to ever know about it and no one to ever do anything to remedy it. Transparency will make sure we shine a spotlight on where we need to do better as well as celebrating when schools are doing really well.''
Asked what she would do in response to the threatened ban on NAPLAN testing, Ms Gillard said: ''The My School website will go live on January 28 and it will give Australians rich performance information about schools, including their results in the last two years of national testing.''
The NSW Teachers Federation president, Bob Lipscombe, said NSW teachers would join their colleagues across Australia.
A spokeswoman for the NSW Minister for Education, Verity Firth, said the minister had urged the union not to ban the tests.
The Greens MP John Kaye said league tables would stigmatise schools. ''Australia is fortunate that it has a teacher workforce that is prepared to save this nation from the mistakes that are crippling school education in England and the USA,'' Dr Kaye said. |
