I do not question Del Potro's talent but I think he played quite poorly in first 3 sets. What really gave him a lifeline is that Federer somehow with all his experience and skill dropped his serve when he served for the second set and was leading 30-0. Even when he was leading 2 sets to 1, he still did not apply pressure and continued to produce errors.
Federer should have won in straight sets today, but i think he let his concentration drop, allowed Del Potro to keep his hopes up and hit his shots. It was quite a disappointing performance from Federer today. I dont know what his coach is telling him but the trick in tennis is always to apply pressure.
It seems that in the past 1.5 years, Federer has not performed as well in grand slams, he lost it to Nadal in 2008 Wimbledon (almost lost in straight sets on his favourite surface), lost in 2009 Australian open when he should have won, almost lost to Tommy Haas and Del Potro in 2009 French open (these were quarter and semi finals), really struggled against Roddick in 2009 Wimbledon. And now this defeat against Del Potro who has not been in a grand slam final and has never beaten Federer in the past 6 meetings. I think there is a clear decline in form happening here.
Regarding the Nadal vs Del Potro match, i dont think too much should be taken from that. Nadal is still leading in their head to head series and he has abdominal muscle issues while playing US open.
Besides, when Nadal was Del Potro's age, he already won 2 grand slams. He won his first grand slam (French) at age 19, younger than Del Potro. In fact, if we are talking about male players in recent times, Nadal has the best grand slam results for a player aged 22, federer, murray, djokovic, del potro, roddick, even sampras, or any player you name it has not won 6 grand slams at age 23. I dont think Del Potro will win another 5 slams in the next 2 years. |
