Quivering, I lifted a hand to open the door. The shadow of it hung over my shoulders. As it slid opened, I managed to steady my breath. I’d repeated this about four hundred times before, but despite that I was still afraid. Afraid of the sinister darkness that surrounded me, making me feel that it had engulfed my courage to pure black, shut the door behind my heart. But to think again, I have no heart. I have no feelings. My life does it all for me, living to suit what has been written in my own biography which has come before my life, generations ago.
Reaching for the little tube in my pocket, I sighed. This was just my life, going and getting some thoughts and ideas from humans, expecting them to help us be the leaders of the world. Robots, I mean. We’ve done this for ages and now it is a routine. We don’t even know it was stealing. We thought our ruling would be good for Earth, and we thought capturing the ideas of humans would be ideal for it.
I scanned my surroundings. A girl and a bed-a girl on a bed, her eyes misty. Soft snoring. The room smelled like aroma. I poked the sharp end of the tube into her ears and blew. Warm air washed across my face. When the tube began flashing red I quickly took it back. I peeked inside to see what I had gotten, but in the corner of my eye I saw a shiny and bright mirror.
I trotted towards it. The mirror was dotted with crystals so pure it could illuminate the sunlight. I looked inside it and immediate feelings brushed against my heart, the first time I really had one. Words emerged from the mirror.
“You do not understand this, Robot.” The mirror read. “This is the Mirror of Truth. You have never known this because you have never understood this, that your ancestors and hidden this away from you. I declare this right now that you have done many terrible things in your life, to destroy humans for eternity, to steal themselves and their brain till they shrink, shrink in rank, shrink in imagination. You have stolen their thoughts, though you think it is absolutely normal. It is your life, what you were meant for. But it is wrong.”
“What?” I stammered, not in my usual monotonous voice.
“Sometimes you just don’t know who you are because you didn’t make yourself you.” The mirror seemed to sigh.
“So I am evil?”
“You aren’t really evil. You are just born to be like that though…” The mirror faded away into the darkness, leaving me standing there alone. I racked my brain for what should I do, but something already had overwhelmed me. I stood still and threw the tube into a nearby rubbish bin.
“No,” I whiapered slowly, my fist clenched. “This is not happening.”
