Network Engineer
Job description
The Network Engineer will assist the Network Group in all network design, implementation, maintenance, upgrade, management and security of communications infrastructure (voice, data and wireless). The Network Engineer will also ensure solution and operational issues are thoroughly documented and consistent with our long-term roadmap for data networking service capabilities.
Desired Skills and Experience
• Provides operational support and handles troubleshooting production issues to optimize data networking throughout the campus environment.
• Responsible for the installation, operation, and on-going maintenance of the WCMC network and communications infrastructure including the associated hardware, software, cable plants, systems and relationships (vendors, peers, etc.) used to provide services.
• Creates project specific documentation including charters, plans, budget estimates, hardware quotes, KB articles for information on operations, and others as needed.
• Facilitates and coordinates with vendors, suppliers, and IT teams in resolution of network and systems faults or upgrades, as delegated by senior staff in the Network Group.
• Uses measuring and diagnostic tools to test and troubleshoot operational issues. Monitors and analyzes statistical data to improve system performance.
• Participates in the evaluation of vendor hardware, software, and network communications products; recommends purchases consistent with WCMC short and long term objectives. Participates in the design and implementation of selected software and hardware solutions, systems, or products in an Enterprise Network Environment, which includes both new systems, as well as upgrades to existing solutions. Participates in a rotating on-call schedule for off hours support.
• Ensures that continuous enhancements are initiated in order to guarantee efficient resource utilization and acceptable response times to users
• Provides a point of escalation for Network Analysts when engineering expertise is needed to resolved issues and problems relating to service availability and operations.
• Assists in the planning, configuration, deployment and support of campus LAN/WAN infrastructure.
• Documents advanced Enterprise Wired and Wireless Solutions using tools such as VISIO, Excel and Word Documents to depict physical and logical associations and integrations.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
