Beautiful sighting of the MIGALOO, the world's only known all-white adult humpback whale, has been recorded playing on the NSW Mid North Coast on Saturday morning. Migaloo was reported for the first time off the NSW South Coast on Wednesday and near Botany on Thursday.
Migaloo whale is considered as part of the 20,000 strong humpback whale cohorting on their northerly migration to the Great Barrier Reef to breed. Large numbers of Humpback whales pass close to by Australia's most easterly point, Byron Bay, every year, gathering tourists and locals.
Wally Franklin, Suffolk Park whale researcher, said that the Migaloo is expected to reach Byron Bay in coming few days. Unique feature of the Migaloo whale which makes it an incredible ambassador is its white colour.
Franklin said that seeing Migaloo whale, on returning to the east coast migration every year, is really very exciting. "So many people up and down the coast are involved with individual whales and each year there are an increasing number of reports of well-known individuals".
Icon project, a project that aims to create awareness among people regarding increase in whale threats, has been launched with 72 councils across the country taking part in the project. Mr. Franklin said that the white humpback whales sing same beautiful song every year.
He added that their team is planning to set up a local radio station to record the songs of the whales when they head north off Byron Bay.
