Dollar hits fresh 24-year high, nudges US95c

THE dollar opened firmer today after reaching US95 cents for the first time in 24 years as more evidence emerged of a US economic slowdown.
At 12 noon AEDT, the Australian dollar was trading at $US0.9442/45, up from yesterday's close of 0.9408/12.
During the local morning session, the domestic currency traded between a low of $US0.9444 and a high of $US0.9491, which was reached around 7am AEDT.
The Australian dollar hit $US0.9498 about 6am AEDT, which was its strongest level since March 21, 1984 when the currency closed at $US0.9553.
But according to Iress market data, the Australian dollar traded between a low of $US0.9370 and a high of 0.9502.
"We had something like $US0.9502 at 6.10 am this morning - it was obviously very brief," Lehman Brothers chief economist Stephen Roberts said. |
