I'm a physiotherapist and this is what I think:
1. If it's improving with basic rest / ice, emergency department definitely will tell you to go back to your GP (because your pain is not bad enough and you are getting better).
2. If you have no neurological symptoms, i.e. weakness / pins and needles / numbness or other unusual sensation in your legs or groin region, you are unlikely to have damage to your nervous system. However if you suddenly developed things like loss of bowel / bladder control or weired feeling around there you will need to go to emergency department.
3. You have had trauma so injury could happen to both the spine or the muscles around it, sometimes even internal organs. Will require Xray to rule out fractures in the spine. Both of these injuries can cause pain with bending / side bending / rolling over in bed due to the recent trauma and muscle spasms associated (yes we do use muscles on the side of waist when we lift arms and legs too).
Based on what you are describing I'd agree with your GP you may not need to see specialist at this stage. If you are improving with rest just give it a couple extra days and see.
