Suspicions about the motive for spying revelations

THE real scandal in the Indonesian spying incident is the behaviour of the ABC. This incident happened in 2009 under a Labor government. US fugitive Edward Snowden placed this in the public domain months ago. Now it has been dragged up just when the government is in delicate negotiations with Indonesia about people-smuggling. There can be little doubt it was timed to cause as much damage to the government and the Prime Minister as possible. If Australia's national interests are also damaged in the process, then evidently that is fair game as far as the ABC is concerned. No doubt any criticism of the ABC will be treated with a shoot-the-messenger response. Well, what was the message? That we sometimes spy on our neighbours as do most nations with the facilities to do so? That is hardly news and certainly does not justify the ABC's action. I am deeply shocked by this. That a national broadcasting agency should seek to destabilise an elected government by releasing sensitive information in this way suggests a deep malaise. John Reid, Cygnet, Tas
THERE is a deeper question to be asked about the classified documents that Edward Snowden provided to the ABC and The Guardian. When did Snowden release these documents? Last week? Why are these spying accusations against Australia being released now? Is it to do maximum damage to the Abbott Coalition government, rather than the Labor government when it was still in office? The information should have been released immediately by the ABC and The Guardian to avoid accusations of playing politics. Can we now expect a drip-feed of damaging accusations every few months?Ailsa Lennox, Hawthorne, Qld
THE fact that Indonesia has recalled its ambassador because of Australia monitoring the mobile phone of Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and others is a very serious matter. It is not just an unfriendly act, it is an embarrassment. International diplomacy is an art form if executed with intelligence. It needs an ethical value base and includes connections in which trust and respect are important components. Everyone is aware of the importance of intelligence organisations gathering information to safeguard the security of nations. However, judging from recent revelations of the extent of information gathering in the US, one wonders whether we have overstepped the mark.Frederika Westerman, Caloundra, Qld
AS the Indonesian spying drama unfolds, no doubt knives are being sharpened to fillet Tony Abbott's handling of the issue. How easy would it be for Abbott to apologise profusely to the Indonesian government for the outrageous acts of the previous government? So far, Abbott has refrained from politicising the incident. Does anyone imagine that if this incident had occurred on Abbott's watch, Labor and the Greens would be calling for heads to roll?Peter O'Brien, Catalina, NSW
ABOUT 40 years ago, as an employee of the federal government, I passed through Bali in Indonesia. At that time, the first five-star hotel had just opened and we were to stay there overnight. We were briefed by our intelligence staff that every room in the hotel was bugged and that we should take care in what we said. It was an ideal place to gather intelligence since it was the only world-class hotel in the area, one that attracted visiting VIPs from all over the world. At the time no one was upset because all countries gathered intelligence from all other countries then - and today. We should realise that Indonesia has always spied on others, and known that others were spying on them. So its hysteria during the past few days should be considered a hypocritical sham only to be believed by the uninformed.N. Ford, Kambah, ACT
ELECTRONIC eavesdropping and code breaking was an integral part of the war in the Pacific which directly involved the islands that now make up Indonesia. It has also been a feature of international relations during the 20th and 21st centuries. It is inconceivable that the Indonesians were ignorant of the use of electronic eavesdropping and code breaking of the communications between friends, neighbours and enemies. One can only speculate at the true motives behind Indonesia's over-reaction to the spying "revelations". However, it seems likely that the revelations are being exploited by the Indonesian government to divert public attention from domestic politics, and to justify Indonesian inaction on stopping boatpeople.Paul Tooker, Bald Knob, Qld
YOU can bet Indonesia has maintained a formidable intelligence capability at home and overseas. It defies logic that Indonesia does not spy on its nearest neighbours. Indonesia is entitled to be miffed, but people-smugglers have operated with apparent immunity from detection by Indonesian authorities. Listening in to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and his wife is probably a step too far, but one can only wonder about the reasons it was thought necessary.Allen Arthur, Middleton, SA |
