Mulloway (previously known as Jewfish) stocks are classified as overfished. When a fish population is overfished, the fishing mortality rate on juveniles and adults is too high and there are too few large fish in the population to maintain sufficient recruitment for future sustainable fishing. Fishing mortality therefore has to be reduced significantly to achieve recovery.
From 1 November 2013 there will be some changes to commercial fishing and recreational fishing rules for mulloway.
The new rules do not include a total ban on take. A total ban would have driven a faster recovery, however, it was considered preferable to balance the rate of recovery with the impacts on recreational and commercial fishers.
The recreational bag limit for mulloway will be reduced from 5 to 2 fish. The minimum legal length will be increased from 45 cm to 70 cm. The extensive community consultation undertaken by the NSW Government showed there was strong support to implement a minimum legal length of 70 cm and a reduced bag limit.
The new minimum legal length will apply to recreational and commercial fishing. To minimise wastage of incidental catch, commercial Estuary General fishers using meshing nets will have a by-catch allowance (possession limit) of 10 fish between 45 and 70 cm.
In addition, a 500 kg possession limit for commercial Ocean Hauling endorsement holders will apply.
