Eating yogurt reduces hay fever attacks
Research at the University of California-Davis found that eating yogurt every day significantly reduced the incidence of hay fever attacks, especially those caused by grass pollen. The friendly bacteria in the yogurt helps support the immune and digestive systems which can lessen allergies.
A study of 120 adults found that eating just six ounces of yogurt a day (a typical serving is eight ounces) considerably reduced the number of days the participants had hay fever attacks, especially from grass pollens. Study participants also had fewer symptoms of hay fever and allergies.
To retain all of yogurt's benefits, eat it cold or at room temperature. Heating yogurt (as in baked foods, hot soups or casseroles) destroys good bacteria. And, not just any yogurt will do. Some yogurt is pasteurized after the cultures are added, which will kill off the bacteria. To improve hay fever, you must consume a probiotic yogurt. A widely held definition of a probiotic is live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts, confer a beneficial health effect on the host. To find a probiotic yogurt, read the label and check to see that it contains live and active cultures. If it does, it is what you are looking for. |
