THE peak body representing Australia's universities has called for more transparency in the government's new My University website and warned that some of the figures are not as accurate or reliable as they should be.

The head of Universities Australia, Belinda Robinson, said: ''We don't believe the … website is there yet, particularly in relation to attrition rates, staff-student ratios, the entry score cut-off search function, course mapping and searchability.''

The new one-stop shop website, which follows the popular but controversial My School site, attracted 20,000 hits on its first day yesterday.

The University of NSW stood out as the standard bearer in the state, with the best chance of students finding a job after study and the lowest student-staff ratio. UNSW ties with Charles Sturt University for the highest graduate outcomes in NSW at 85.4 per cent, right behind the national leader Charles Darwin University (87.7 per cent). Southern Cross University has the lowest in the state, with 66.7 per cent.

Information about student-staff ratios was criticised in several quarters as not adequately showing the breakdown of general and academic staff.

The National Tertiary Education Union said the government had not learnt from My School and had created a league table that did not address the issue of quality.
