Peyton Swinburn is such an active toddler that mum Claire usually changes her nappy while she is standing up, but a frightening discovery in a disposable nappy has left her promising to pay closer attention in future.

Ms Swinburn was just about to put the nappy on 13-month old Peyton when she noticed a piece of wood sticking out of the nappy like a spike. On closer inspection, she discovered that it was in fact a six-inch long wooden splinter, and that it appeared to have been woven into the material of the nappy.

'I was just about to change my daughter and thought 'Oh my God,’ she says. 'I had a closer look and realised it looked like a stick, a big long piece of wood, which was sharp at both ends, like a toothpick.’

She describes the finding as shocking, and says she was angry to think about how badly hurt Peyton might have been had she not noticed the splinter before she put the nappy on.

'Because Peyton's walking around, I often put the nappies on quickly while she's standing up, so I probably would have missed it, but this time she was lying down, so I saw it in time.'

Ms Swinburn contacted the nappy’s manufacturer, Kimberley-Clark, who apologised and offered her a voucher to replace the nappies, but she says the offer is ‘not good enough’.

‘At the end of the day you don't want to find this sort of thing in nappies. I want them to make sure this doesn't happen to any other parent,’ she says’

A spokesperson for Kimberley-Clark says the company is undertaking a thorough investigation into the incident, and has asked Ms Swinburn to provide samples from the packet the affected nappy came from.

'As a responsible manufacturer, the safety and well-being of our consumers is our first priority. We take the utmost care to manufacture our products to the highest quality and have stringent procedures and checks in place to ensure these standards are maintained,’ the company spokesperson says.

However Ms Swinburn says the experience has put her off and she won’t be buying that brand of nappy again.
