A Chinese-built Peugeot sedan will go on sale in Australia in the second half of next year with "very competitive" pricing to take on the mid-size sedan segment dominated by the Toyota Camry, Ford Mondeo and Mazda6.
Speaking to Drive at the Australian International Motor Show this morning, Peugeot Automobile Australia has confirmed the 2012 arrival of its 408 mid-size sedan that made its global debut at the Beijing motor show early last year.
The sedan is not to be confused as a successor to Peugeot's larger 407 sedan - the more upmarket 508 range - which made its Australian debut today.
The French brand's local arm says that the 408 sedan will be sold as a single engine variant - a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol four-cylinder engine mated exclusively to an automatic transmission.
"There are a few more hurdles to jump in terms of [right-hand-drive] engineering and other [ADR] aspects to go through," says Peugeot Automobile Australia managing director Ken Thomas.
"We'll step into that [mid-size sedan] market with a solid proposition and a very competitive price".
Built at the Wuhan plant in Hubei province under a joint venture program between Dongfeng and Peugeot-Citroen Automobile, the 408 sedan - or "Peugeot DF 408" - sits on a stretched platform of the 308 Touring for additional rear-seat legroom and boot space.
Despite a mere five-year presence in China, the 408 accounts for one in four Peugeot models in the world's largest car market (the sedan's second-biggest market after France) since it went on sale in April last year.
China also marks Peugeot's third-largest market after France and the UK.
The 408 scores a maximum five-star crash test rating with China's NCAP program.
